Monterey's - 17 Jan 2009

Cuisine: International, buffet
Location: Perth CBD, The Sheraton

I have a more recent food review of Monterey’s.

Located at The Sheraton, the smorgasbord on offer is a place I used to go to in my teens for family birthdays, although I hadn’t been for several years. Back then the range was amazing and was excellent value. I didn’t quite understand, though, why this place wasn’t that popular. There was a range of fresh seafood, salads, a chef that could whip up a few meals in front of you depending on the choices for the day, and an amazing range of pastries and desserts that were delicious. To round things off, a cheese board and coffee and tea were available. Several years on, things have changed with the range and selection cut down while the price has risen markedly. Fortunately, they had a coupon buy one get one free so there were a number of people there with their vouchers in hand. They still had soups but I went for the smoked salmon and plenty of prawns and mussels with the tasty sauces. Unfortunately, one has to spend a fair amount of time cleaning the prawns before you can actually sit back and enjoy them. The service is immaculate as per usual. I went for my next round of mains and they had quite a decent offering with some surprising meals providing some interesting flavours. Unfortunately, by the time I got around to the desserts, the range was reduced a great deal and they weren’t all that great which is disappointing given the quality of desserts they used to serve.

Verdict: A good range with something for everyone, but the desserts were passable apart from the sorbets.
Price: Expensive (With coupon a bargain)
Taste: Delicious
Value: Reasonable. Yes, times have changed and food is much pricier especially when there’s seafood on offer but I think it’s quite expensive. However, given some people’s appetite, it might be very reasonable for the amount consumed. (With a coupon, it’s excellent value.)
Recommendation: Recommend

Restaurant Rating System

It's subjective but I base my reviews on 4 key areas:

Price: Bargain > Reasonable > Moderately Expensive > Expensive
Taste: Poor > Average > Great > Delicious
Value: Poor > Good > Reasonable > Excellent
Recommendation: Eat At Home Instead > Try Once If You Want But Not Worth Visiting Again > Worth Visiting > Recommend > Highly Recommend

The final recommendation will consider the price, taste and value. Value will be based on price and other factors like service and serving size.
