We had spied this place due to open in the popular & busy Shafto Lane. About a month or too later, we were fortunate to secure a booking for a team lunch. This place doubles as a restaurant and a brewery and serves one particular beer which can’t be bought at the shops. We took our seats on the bar stools surrounding individual tables but it was rather unusual as the tables were at quite a height such that eating would be a little awkward but drinking wouldn’t be very difficult! I felt in the mood for some paella and I was happy to see it on the menu so that’s what I ordered. As soon as it was brought out I was thinking, there’s no way that is paella. It looked like a lovely spicy risotto. If it said that on the menu and I got what I was served, I’d be chuffed. The meal was delicious and was generous in serving, but it wasn’t paella. I wasn’t impressed as the point of ordering something from the menu is to get what you ordered, not something else. I did drop a complaint via email. I’m not an expert on paella and maybe this was a different version but if they keep serving that, they obviously must think people in Perth are idiots.
I did return again (see my food review of The Generous Squire in January 2010) and the experience was better in that I got what I ordered.
Verdict: Tasty and generous meal but the meal I was served was not what I ordered in my opinion.
