Last day of another year and the year cannot end without another visit to some eating establishment. Since the workday turns out to be a half day, a few of us headed down to Murray Street to try out the Country Road Cafe. After walking through the store to get to the back of the cafe, I did recognise coming here once before long long ago but it was pretty packed so we had given it a miss that time. Today, with not many people about, it wasn’t as much of a fight to grab a table, either in the outdoor setting or in the air conditioned interior. It wasn’t too hot but we played it safe by going indoors. The menu is pretty simple and is mainly vegetarian but don’t let that scare you away as there’s toasted Turkish bread sandwiches, potato and leek pie, pasta, Caesar salads and other offerings. They also do fruit juices.
I went for the Caesar salad with chicken and grabbed our reserved table which had our name written on the table. Haven’t seen that before! Within a few minutes, out came all the meals in quick time. I got a huge plate of salad with an array of greens, a quartered hard boiled egg, plenty of chunks of shredded roast chicken, and a couple of slices of toasted Turkish bread.
To be honest, I’ve never eaten a Caesar salad so I wasn’t too sure what to expect. The serving is certainly generous and the salad is fresh and moist. The sauce is subtle, gives moisture to the salad and is tasty without being overpowering. There’s a real mix of greens, red onions, cabbage, bacon and chicken. It took a while to get through the meal but I succeeded.
Verdict: I left feeling quite satisfied. It didn’t wow me but was solid. For the price, I think it’s quite reasonable and the cool interior or a table outside makes for a pleasant setting. I wouldn’t mind coming back to try the pie, but personally, the menu offerings aren’t to my taste but that doesn’t mean it won’t appeal to other people.
Recommendation: Worth Visiting Again
