Despite changing jobs, I still keep in touch with a few ex-colleagues and one of them happened to be leaving and I was fortunate to get an invite along to the leaving lunch, held at The Generous Squire. Readers of my earlier posts know that I wasn’t impressed with the risotto that was passed off as paella, although tasty, was not what I ordered. However, they did redeem themselves with a really tasty steak sandwich. This time around, I thought I’d try something different and after much deliberation, went with the fish and chips.
One thing about The Generous Squire, as per the name of the restaurant, they certainly are generous in their servings. After seeing the plates with a fair amount of food still present at the end of the meal, I think they are a bit too generous. It’s a shame to see such good food go to waste. I’d suggest they cut down the servings and take a bit off the price.
Sitting on the wooden benches in the pleasant weather of the afternoon, out came my plate of fish and chips. There were 3 decent pieces of fish and a reasonable quantity of chips accompanied by a large salad. I really enjoyed the lightly battered fish with the small dish of tartare sauce and the few wedges of lemon. The chips were pretty good too, but I enjoyed the shoestring fries I had last time. I was pretty full after all that and I hadn’t even touched my salad. I dove in and the dressing was really refreshing and tasty. It made the whole salad delicious and went down well. After a bit of a struggle, I cleaned the plate and raised my arms in victory! I was so stuffed I didn’t eat dinner that day. No food wasted on my plate!
Verdict: Tasty and generous meal once again, lovely fish and chips meeting my expectations with a delicious salad which was a surprise. Salads are usually okay but the dressing makes all the difference as was the case here.
