Cuisine: Modern Australian
Location: Perth CBD, inside Country Road Store
Another hot summer’s day saw a large group of colleagues grab a farewell lunch at Country Road Cafe. While their menu is predominately vegetarian, there are a few meat offerings. I thought I’d try the roasted sweet potato pie with leek, spinach and fetta. I’m a big fan of meals with pastry and this meal did not disappoint. I was a bit worried about the sweet potato as it can get quite sweet after eating a reasonable quantity, but the roasting effect stymies the sweetness without losing the flavour that sweet potato offers. The combination with leek, spinach and the perfect quantity of fetta ensured all the elements came together to create a tasty pie. The pastry was delicious and the fetta hung in the background without being overpowering, yet offering the right amount of cheesiness and saltiness to the pie. A simple meal but well created. The meal also comes with a salad which is a nice complement to the meal on a hot day but nothing cools you down more than a selection of their juices. I went with the juice of the day which contained cranberry, passion fruit, and watermelon. Pretty good. Unfortunately, with a large party we were placed in the outdoor area rather than the indoor air-conditioned surroundings. Can’t do too much about the heat.
Verdict: I really enjoyed the pie with all elements coming together and the perfect amount of fetta to give the cheesiness and right amount of salt to the dish. The pastry was especially tasty and topped off with a refreshing glass of the juice of the day.
Recommendation: Worth Visiting Again
