Secret Garden - 21 Dec 2011

Cuisine: Modern Australian
Location: Perth CBD, lane-ways off Murray Street

My last visit here was a pleasant one, enjoying the Moroccan burger. Today, The Secret Garden played host to a lunch between a few teams as part of an away day. Last time it was horrible and rainy but today, bright sunshine which made it ideal to sit outside in the enclosed garden area – the secret garden.

The menu is towards organic and has a mixture of vegetarian options and those that like their meat. There are daily specials but the menu range isn’t extensive. I was tossing up whether to go with the salt and pepper squid but that choice was eliminated when the wait staff told us the deep fryer was out of action. I decided upon the burrito with optional spiced chicken and an affogato too. Last time I came here I asked for juice expecting it to be fresh but it was out of a bottle. I expected something a bit similar with the affogato but I was wrong. I tucked into the large mound of ice cream with the coffee which teamed nicely. It’s only when I took a sip after the ice cream was over and got a very bitter taste (by now you would have figured I’m not a coffee drinker!) that it struck me it was the real deal. Ah well, a few sips here and there with the meal made it bearable.

I was a bit full after drinking most of the affogato so when my meal came up quite quickly along with everyone else’s, I wasn’t too hungry. A large tortilla nicely filled with red kidney beans and guacamole to one side and rice to the other with the chicken. A lovely garden salad with dressing and a tequila lime salsa also covered the plate. I enjoyed the burrito. It was simple and enjoyable but a bit on the bland side. I expected a lot more flavour from the spiced rice and chicken but it didn’t carry much flavour.

Food Review Summary

Verdict: Enjoyed dining outside in the undercover and enclosed garden. My burrito was good but could have been more flavoursome with stronger level of spices required. The salad and salsa were lovely though. I was more than full with the affogato and my meal.

Restaurant Rating System

It's subjective but I base my reviews on 4 key areas:

Price: Bargain > Reasonable > Moderately Expensive > Expensive
Taste: Poor > Average > Great > Delicious
Value: Poor > Good > Reasonable > Excellent
Recommendation: Eat At Home Instead > Try Once If You Want But Not Worth Visiting Again > Worth Visiting > Recommend > Highly Recommend

The final recommendation will consider the price, taste and value. Value will be based on price and other factors like service and serving size.
