I was back again at the Twilight Hawkers Markets to try something new. On my way out last time I had spied a truck selling ribs and burgers so I kept an eye out today and also had a quick look around to see if there were any other new stalls. There’s plenty to choose from like:
- Indian curries
- Moroccan tajins
- German bratwurst sausages
- Korean pancakes
- Polish jam donuts
- Spiral spuds on a stick
- Argentinian asado (barbecued meat)
- Spanish paella
- Indonesian satay sticks
- Japanese delights
- Turkish gozleme and sweets
- Snags & Sons sausages
- Pandan desserts
I’ve probably missed some out but as you can see, there’s plenty to choose from so don’t say you’re not spoilt for choice. I decided to make my way over to the far end of Forrest Chase towards Wellington Street where a red truck was parked selling American fare. There’s some interesting choices on the menu such as burgers, cheese fries, short ribs, and potentially a few desserts. I decided to try the short ribs which have been marinated for 15 hours and comes with a serve of coleslaw. I asked the two guys what Buttys.com.au was – where they based somewhere? No fixed location, just a pop up food stall on wheels going from event to event feeding the hungry crowds. I didn’t have to wait too long and was handed a decent sized box with several ribs and a serve of coleslaw, all for just $10.
I walked over and took a seat on the steps facing Forrest Chase as there’s not too much seating available up this end. With the provided fork, I poked the tongs in to the meat and it was so ridiculously tender the meat had already fallen off the bone before even poking at it! There were a few large ribs but there was actually a decent amount of meat provided which made the $10 price tag an absolute steal. The ribs were really delicious. I loved the BBQ sauce they were marinated in and the meat was extremely tender and flavoursome. The coleslaw was fresh and crunchy and had a lovely sweet mayonaise dressing. I really enjoyed it and stopped by to let the guys know it was fantastic. Great meal for just $10.
Twilight hawkers markets every Friday, so make sure you head down to Forrest Chase between 5-9pm to sample some cuisines from various cultures. It’s cash only and remember that these are not professional kitchens, you might need to have some patience while your meal is prepared, especially if there are long queues, so get in early and enjoy.
