Cuisine: Modern Australian, Pub Food
Location: Perth CBD, Shafto Lane
I was catching up for lunch with some ex-colleagues and after too many visits to Northbridge Chinese for yum cha, I thought a change in venue was much needed and headed to Durty Nelly’s Irish Pub in Shafto Lane. I last visited a few years ago in June 2011 and enjoyed the generous servings.
As with pub food, there’s plenty of choice from burgers to steak sandwiches; pizza’s; a few Irish dishes given the pub is Irish such as bangers and mash; and then a range of typical mains such as curries, chicken parmigiana, and of course, steaks. The prices are very reasonable and there were specials available too.
I decided to try the steak sandwich @ $22 - tender sirloin, grilled mustard onions, lettuce, tomato, swiss cheese, tomato relish & aioli in a toasted Turkish roll served with chips. We had arrived shortly after 12pm so placing orders was quick and easy and allowed us plenty of time to catch up. The wait was a little longer than I wanted, but maybe it was due to the hunger I was developing. This version of steak sandwich was served on a Turkish roll which was well toasted, crisp on the outside but soft on the inside. The steak was tender and enjoyable. Nothing worse than a tough or chewy steak with gristle. Not the case here. The tomato relish was an excellent touch and really lifted the meal, providing moistness and that unique sweet flavour. All the other ingredients combine well to make the sandwich a sandwich. The chips were pretty good as well and all in all, made for a comfortably filling and relaxing lunch.
Food Review Summary
Verdict: Shafto Lane is always buzzing with activity and the restaurants along this strip have got to meet the mark. Durty Nelly’s Irish Pub is an icon of the lane but has company with The Generous Squire, where I enjoyed a fantastic steak sandwich. While Durty Nelly’s version couldn’t match The Generous Squire version, I still enjoyed the steak sandwich and flavours present, particularly the tomato relish. I was really after something kind of simple and the steak sandwich hit the mark.
