Location: New Zealand, Wellington
After the museum I’d now built up an appetite and headed to Mama Brown. I ordered the Kentucky Hot Brown Boy for NZ$15 – Sliced Southern fried chicken topped with cheese, crispy bacon and pico de gallo in savoury French toast. Sounded interesting and I like what I saw when the dish was presented.
I really enjoyed it. The toast isn’t as soft and fluffy as the sweet version as it needs to hold a lot of contents. There’s lots of gooey cheese and the sliced chicken is tender but I think that the light batter and spice gets lost in the other elements. The pico de gallo provides a nice freshness and the salad lessens the richness. It took me a little while to realize the seating along the walls were in fact straight out of an airplane! Unusual. Service was excellent despite the casualness of the venue and quirky style. Nice menu which takes an American theme with various milkshakes and a few dessert classics.
Mama Brown Food Review Summary
Verdict: Mama Brown is a casual venue with an American style menu that serves a breakfast menu well into the afternoon, aside from milkshakes and desserts. I chose the Kentucky Hot Brown Boy which was a unique dish – chicken with other elements on a savoury French toast. I really liked it and it made for a lovely lightish lunch. The gooey melted cheese, tender chicken, freshness of the pico de gallo, and the side salad worked well to produce a tasty meal.
