I returned to Mr Bun to especially try the crispy pig ears marinated in five spice but received a dish which was different to my expectations, and the picture in the menu. It looked like a plate of bacon rind but had a range of textures from soft and glutinous, to chewy and crunchy. There was flavour present but quite mild. Fortunately, I also ordered a plate of the traditional Beijing dry style noodles which were delicious. You can really appreciate the care they take in making these delicious noodles by hand and mixing the black soy bean paste with minced beef through turns it in to something special. It’s quite a filling meal and while the pig ears didn’t hit the spot for me, the simplicity of this noodle dish shone through. I still love the beef in broth from last time, that’s their signature dish.
I’ve visited Jus Burgers before and particularly enjoyed the Wagyu beef burger, but on this visit courtesy of owner Justin Bell, he treated me to a sample of sliders from the new refreshed menu, as well as a number of sides. The old favourites are still on the menu and they now serve beer and wine, but I really enjoyed the new additions. The Americano is excellent, a taste of the US right their on your plate with a delicious well cooked Wagyu beef pattie, pickles, ketchup, American Kraft cheese, and mustard providing the flavours typical of a burger you’ll find in the US. The pulled pork packs plenty of bold flavour, chunks of meat that pull apart are immediately uplifted by the delicious flavour packed sauce. The Shark Bay prawn slider also carries a strong flavour of the sea in the prawn packed pattie surrounded by a very crunchy batter. For the sides, the Parmesan chips with truffle oil are unique and tasty, I really liked the refreshing palette cleansing digestive aiding Spanish slaw with a lovely dressing, and first time trying Jus Burgers famed onion rings which didn’t disappoint. The deep golden brown coloured batter encasing chunks of onion rings perfectly cooked, no rawness and not mushy, delivered on flavour, taste, crunch and looks. The sweet potato wedges were a surprise for me, partnering perfectly with the hit of chilli from the Serrano sauce offsetting the sweetness of the wedges. Finally, some lovely creamy aoili to enjoy with the chips, onion rings, and wedges made them taste even better. The new refreshed menu offers plenty of choice among burgers, sides, slaws, and now beer & wine. It’s a cool relaxed vibe to kick back and enjoy a burger so if you haven’t visited Jus Burgers, what are you waiting for?
Royal Siam Kitchen offers up a range of curry and noodle dishes for lunch and an expanded menu for dinner which includes entrees and desserts. I love red curry so I chose that and throughly enjoyed the meal. The red curry has a delicious red curry flavour, slightly creamy, slightly sweet, a lovely blend of spices to deliver an authentic flavour. The meal is pretty filling and great value. Maybe I’ll have to pop in after work for dinner. A lovely Thai restaurant.

On a cold winters day I can definitely see myself coming to Mr Bun and ordering a big bowl of flavoursome spicy broth with chunks of oh so tender beef and tasty noodles. This is an unassuming place with delicious food. I think it’s a bit of a hidden gem. They may have a small menu but I really loved the noodle dish which was so full of flavour, hearty, tasty, spicy, delicious. At just $11 it’s a steal. The Chinese burger is quite different and interesting. I also enjoyed it but much prefer the bowl of noodles.
Koko Black, a specialty chocolatier, serve up a range of delicious hand crafted chocolate varieties for you to take away. Aside from the chocolates on display, they also offer a few savoury items as well as the sweet, along with coffee and hot chocolate for you to enjoy in their salon. The hot chocolate was delicious with a lovely flavour of quality chocolate, although, it’s a bit pricey at $6.50. The individual chocolates are $2.10 each and are well worth the money. There’s other chocolate items to sample including boxed sets. I think having Koko Black in the heart of the Perth CBD will make it super popular. And who doesn’t like a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day?
The Old Faithful Bar & BBQ is one of Perth’s newest additions to the dining scene located on King St. Serving American barbecued meats in a casual relaxed vibe, it has a very different concept. Line up and order your meal, line up again at another counter for drinks, wait while your meal is prepared, and then be presented with a paper lined metal tray with your food. The casualness of the place is fine, the service is good, the metal trays are tacky. For a venue specialising in BBQ meats and American cuisine, this place is disappointing. I visited a similar type venue in New York which served slow cooked ribs, brisket and pulled pork that would blow Old Faithful out of the water. The chopped pig sandwich is a burger with well cooked pork which pulls apart, is moist, and combines well with the other ingredients. Even after I ate the burger at the end, it was still quite tasty but lacked an intensity of flavour I was so desperately searching for in trying to recreate my foodie experiences in the US. The chicken wings were pedestrian, and the cornbread was disappointing at best. The menu is very reasonably priced and they offer a good collection of American fare, but while the food wasn’t horrible they have failed to offer Perth diners what true American fare is. The Old Faithful is on to a winner if they can just execute their food in terms of flavour. I also asked my work colleagues what they thought and they weren’t really enamoured. Mixed reviews is being polite.
