Threecoins Italian Trattoria is not a fancy restaurant but one that is family owned and run. This kind of venue presents an inviting atmosphere with good honest food served to patrons and judging by the business of the restaurant, it’s popular with the locals. Stepping in reminds me of my time in Rome and it probably wouldn’t look out of place with the checked red and white tablecloths. I really loved the pumpkin ravioli which was excellent, presenting silky smooth pasta in a lovely Parmesan sauce. The pizza was rather underwhelming for my mind. While it presents a lovely light wood-fired base with lovely toppings confined to separate quarters, it lacked seasoning, punch, and was rather flat. The beef cheeks also lacked a touch of seasoning but was super tender and thoroughly enjoyed with grilled polenta and a sharp salad. I thought they really excelled in their desserts with a delicious light tiramisu and a super smooth pannacotta made from yoghurt to produce a touch of sourness against the usual richness. The Nutella calzone was quite tasty, not too chocolatey and lovely with the ice cream. It’s a bit heavy as a dessert with all that dough. A dinner at Threecoins will present a solid meal in a lovely atmosphere, though, their food falls short in flavour compared to a few other Italian restaurants I’ve visited.
In the most unassuming places one can stumble upon a gem. Sahara Middle Eastern Cuisine offers up some fine dishes. I really enjoyed the different elements of the mixed platter, particularly, the hummus and falafel. The baba ghanouj was rich and creamy and the acidity of the pickles tempers the flavours of all three. With pita bread to enjoy, it’s a lovely dish to eat in summer. The shish kebab carried plenty of flavour, lots of tender lamb, had a bit of a chilli kick, and along with delicious spiced rice and a salad, this made for an excellent lunch. Very filling and totally stuffed. It’s worth the walk.

Not by design, but I’ve been visiting a few burger places of late so an invite to the soft opening of Johnny’s Burger Joint was just what the doctor ordered. I really liked the menu which takes on a distinctly American theme and offers items that you don’t see in Perth. A diner menu for the day plus burgers which keep on being served well into the night. Nothing fancy, just full of heart and flavour. They look that way and initially taste that way, but with each bite the burger’s ingredients transform into something special. It just keeps on getting tastier and tastier. Wash it down with a milkshake, grab some sides like cheese sticks, curly fries, cheese and bacon fries, chilli cheese fries or grab some buffalo wings, and you’re in heaven.
After my invite earlier in the week to V Burger Bar in Floreat to try their new brioche line (priced at $14.50) comprising the Americana, Space Mushroom, and Piggy Back, I vowed to return. I enjoyed the Americana on the night, but missed out on the Piggy Back. The Piggy Back far surpassed the Americana. The sweet BBQ sauce, the chilli kick from the jalapeños, the moistness of the aioli, the freshness of the coleslaw, the tender flavoursome pork, the crunch from the battered deep fried onions, and the slight sweetness of the brioche bun made for a burger that I thoroughly enjoyed. If they just warm or toast the buns, the burger will be even better! V Burger Bar are having a special offer – half price on this new range for 17 -19 October 2014 only. I love visiting patisseries to enjoy fine French pastries. I found the chocolate eclair to be a little substandard to the type of eclair I was expecting in terms of the choux pastry. It appeared to contain chocolate mousse which was delicious though, as opposed to a chocolate custard. The millefeuille contained a lovely custard cream filling but the pastry layers were far too crunchy. I’ve never eaten escargot and this was quite enjoyable. I think the best pastry item of the lot was the chocolate ganache slice. It contained a lovely moist sponge which the perfect balance, not too sweet or not too chocolatey. Instead, the intensity was provided by the dark chocolate layer and the high quality chocolate dusting. I’ve visited several patisseries and while this one offered a range of items, I didn’t think it delivered on what French pastries can really offer.
I came for the paella but the chef was trying to promote another Spanish dish, the name which escapes me and is hard to pronounce. Instead, I settled for this interesting looking dish which I have never eaten. Instead of rice, it uses pasta but looks like chopped up vermicelli. For $12.50, a large pile was heaped into the mini paella dish and served hot with a wedge of lemon and a dollop of optional garlic aioli. At first, it became hard to eat much of it without spilling it and it was piping hot. After things cooled down, I really started to get into this dish. It tastes quite nice, but it has something about it that just keeps you coming back for more. The noodles are cooked well, they aren’t dry, and they are coated in a subtle mix of Spanish flavours and spices which produce an interesting taste. There’s a fair amount of seafood, mainly calamari, but the odd chunk of soft flaky fish is to be found. It’s quite a filling meal and while it might be heating up for summer, it’s a dish that you can’t pass on. And I experienced something new too.
On my first visit I was pleasantly surprised with the unassuming dishes waiting to surprise, packing flavour, elements carefully paired, flavours balanced. Today’s experience didn’t quite live up to the high standards set. The small taste of the pulled pork parcels were perfectly executed with soft tender pork surrounded by a dark golden brown crunchy crumb, but the dish was let down by the lack of seasoning. The small taste of the chicken roulade was excellent, well cooked chicken paired with a delicious pistachio filling. My mains of beef cheek was also under-seasoned and lacked punch, despite being super tender with the meat breaking away with the touch of the tip of a knife. The gnocchi was excellent and couldn’t be faulted. The fondant potatoes wee good but didn’t wow. The small sample of mango panna cotta was superb, silky smooth and full of flavour. The passionfruit mousse was also excellent too. This dessert was easily the best dish of the lunch, but my dessert wasn’t to be disgraced. The banana parfait contained a lovely soft banana flavour which went down well, but I didn’t care for the crumb of chewy peanut brittle. The dark flavours of the chocolate mousse were an excellent finish to the meal, but it probably didn’t pair as well with banana parfait as another element. Then again, who can say no to chocolate!

The night was a lovely affair meeting the owners and other bloggers, enjoying a few of their sides in the delicious golden crumbed haloumi sticks and crumbed mushrooms with blue cheese sauce, before the tough choice, which of the 3 burgers to order. I went with the Americana which was delicious. The touch of sweetness in the brioche bun serves to highlight the savoury elements of the acidic tang from the pickles, the gooey melted cheese, and the chunky beef patty. Packed full of ingredients, the burger is delicious, more so with some lovely chips. I was also surprised to receive a gift bag and I thoroughly enjoyed the chocolate brownie which satisfied my craving for something sweet to finish off the meal. The burgers are priced at $14.50. I walked in and a look at the menu before settling on the Nutella Supreme $7.80 – Nutella, banana, strawberry, roasted almonds, oreos, peanut butter. After a reasonable wait the crepe was served. It looked really delicious! The crepe is quite a large size and well packed full of ingredients. The crepe itself is a little overdone, slightly crunchy, firm, leathery in some spots, and yet for the most part, it’s reasonably soft. I would have preferred my crepe to be cooked a little less. Having said that, each mouthful was delicious. The crepe’s filling contains lots of thinly sliced banana and strawberry pieces that are lovely and soft and warmed through. There’s a nice mix of nutella, adding just that touch of chocolate and sweetness, a bit more chocolate intensity from the crushed oreos, a bit of crunch from the flaked almonds, and a bit of gooeyness from the peanut butter. It’s a feel good dessert, big on the yum factor, big on comfort food. You leave with a smile and a full stomach.
