Cuisine: Frozen Yoghurt, Dessert
Location: Subiaco, Rokeby Road
When I got an invite to the opening of Menchies first store in Perth, I had to ask myself who on earth is Menchies? Menchies are a US chain started by a husband and wife team in 2007 that offer frozen yogurt. Menchie’s mission statement is “we make you smile“. Sounds simple but they have over 100 flavours and as many different toppings to match, which is enough to make anyone happy. It has grown with great success around the US that they expanded internationally, featured in 350 locations worldwide. They also have stores on the east coast of Australia. The Subiaco store opened today is Perth’s first.
The frozen yogurt is made from milk straight from farms in California that are free from artificial growth hormones and the probiotics are shipped over from California before they’re turned into the many yogurt flavours on offer. The fruit is straight from the local Subiaco markets up the road and like some organisations, their mantra is to support the local community. This is the first store in Perth and is just a stone’s throw from the Subiaco train station located on Rokeby Road so I’m sure it will be a big hit for the upcoming summer.
Today was the launch with free frozen yoghurt on offer. I’d joined the queue and patiently waited before entering. Just gab a cup, then head to the frozen yogurt flavour stations which are in groups of 3. The far left and far right have distinct flavours while the middle spout combines the flavours. I had the combined flavour which had caramel and then took a serve of mocha.
Then it’s over to the toppings station which starts with fruit so I took some strawberries and mango balls and lychee jellies before adding some brownies and cookie dough. Further to the left are even more toppings to choose from. You can easily go wild in a place like this. Then go over to the counter to get your creation weighed and pay (of course today was free).
I’d been chatting to some of staff to ask more about Menchies. Several were straight from California, possibly to oversee the new franchise and others were owners. My creation had started to melt a little. At first it looks and tastes a bit like soft serve but then you get the yogurt flavour and it’s really refreshing. The flavours are distinctive and it’s not too cold that it will give you an ice cream headache. The different toppings make a nice addition and it kind of brings out the kid in you. Which is why there were plenty of kids with parents in tow having lots of fun, but even if you’re an adult, the kid inside you will definitely be just as happy. I was.
There’s week long festivities and specials to kick off the new opening which you can check out in the Menchies PDF.
