The Generous Squire – 24 Dec 2014

Cuisine: Modern Australian, Pub Food
Location: Perth CBD, Shafto Lane

Christmas Eve and we were hungry so one of my colleagues who was leaving was in search of a pub serving pints. Problem is after visiting several pubs, all were full. We finally ended up at The Generous Squire where it was standing room only on the upstairs level, so we stood at the bar and ordered some beers and food. Fortunately a few patrons left so there was an alcove free, standing room still, but better than nothing so we took that. I ordered:

Slow Cooked Beef Brisket, Mash, Beer Battered Onion Rings, Swish Chard, Horseradish $28

The Generous Squire - Beef Brisket

The Generous Squire – Beef Brisket

I climbed into the golden brown beer battered onion rings which were delicious and crunchy. The onion was well cooked, not raw, and was a nice start to the meal. The beef brisket is one hell of a chunk of meat. Fortunately it is well cooked, quite tender, but a tad dry at times. It goes well with the moist mash and the touch of horseradish, plus the lovely sauce. I wish they had put more of that lovely sauce as this complimented the brisket perfectly. This is one hearty meal with plenty of mash to go with the chunk of beef. I was really hungry but was finding it a bit of a struggle to finish in the end, but I managed and can say I enjoyed a lovely filling meal.

The Generous Squire Food Review Summary

Verdict: The Generous Squire offers up hearty generous pub meals and today’s choice of the beef brisket was no exception. One chunk of meat is placed in the centre of the plate surrounded by a generous serving of tasty mash, a lovely sauce, a blob of horseradish, and Swiss chard for some greens. One can’t go past the lovely golden brown crispy beer battered onion rings which are a great way to start off the meal. I really liked it and then set off demolishing the chunk of reasonably tender beef brisket. It went well with the mash and sauce, but the dish needs more of that lovely sauce to smother the beef brisket. The beef brisket is tasty but needs a bit of a lift which the sauce provides, just need more of it.
