First time visit to Pete Evans Heirloom restaurant at Fraser Suites in East Perth. I’m not familiar with the paleo inspired dishes but I didn’t find them a significant departure from the usual, in fact, they’re more healthy. For entree I had a delicious flavoursome bone broth which took on a slightly sweet Asian influence. The braised beef brisket and veggies were also excellent. I also had a small taste of the pork belly which is amazing. For mains I thoroughly enjoyed a delicious braised beef short rib which was super tender. With well cooked Asian greens, a salad, fresh chilli, and miso dressing, it went down very well. I also had a small taste of the roasted barramundi which was perfectly cooked and immersed in a creamy tasty sauce. I also tasted the slow roasted lamb which took on the deep flavours of the red wine but the dish was quite muted and subtle. For dessert I had a raw raspberry and cashew cheesecake which resembled more of a coconut slice type dessert, definitely not cheesecake. I also had a taste of the panna cotta which was delicious and the baked chocolate mousse which is a very dense dessert. I really enjoyed the experience, their strengths are the entrees and mains, executing delicious dishes, many with Asian flavours. The desserts I was less enthused about though we were later told the orange and almond cake is excellent. The dishes are quite pricey, though, I was fortunate to get a 50% offer from Dimmi.
St Michael’s offers patrons a classy understated intimate interior with excellent service and beautifully presented dishes that are delicious. I really enjoyed the fried squid which was super tender, had the perfect level of seasoning and batter, and while a tad rich, was paired effectively with the cucumber kimchi. The house bread with vegemite infused butter surprised on the upside, even though I can’t stand vegemite. The pork neck entree was falling apart, delicious, and rich but counteracted by the slightly sour mustard sauce. While the octopus could have been more tender, the strong smoky flavour also partnered nicely against the rich pork neck and acidity from the capsicum salad. The venison for mains was just a touch overdone, spongey, though a bit difficult to cut through. The strong earthy flavours were enjoyed by the sweetness from the beetroot jelly and a slight richness from the cream and macadamias. The pickled beetroot added that slightly acidic element. The vanilla panna cotta didn’t carry the intensity of vanilla I was expecting and was rather muted, however the tart rhubarb offset any richness. The masterstroke of the dessert was the slightly sweet but salty crumble which brought all the elements together. The dessert was tasty but could have had a stronger finish. All in all well presented and thought out dishes, just lacking a little oomph and a bit more execution to take the dishes to the next level.
I really love French cuisine but P’tite Ardoise Bistro really didn’t do French cuisine the justice it deserves. I started with the escargot which served up 3 mini dishes, each containing 3 escargot immersed in a rich tomato base and a crunchy mini toast atop. The escargot were cooked well, nice and tender, some a tad spongey but tasty nonetheless. The crunchy mini toasts were tasty and the tomato base was good, though the dish was solid without being wow. I thought more flavour could have been delivered by additional parsley and potentially more garlic. The venison for mains was also perfectly cooked medium rare and served with a range of earthy vegetables which pair well. However, I felt the dish was underwhelming and quite pedestrian, really serving up meat and 3 veg. The French touches of a delicious sauce and flavour that is well represented in their dishes was lacking in this. I was quite disappointed with the outcome, particularly for the price paid, and passed on dessert.
When you think Spanish two things come to mind – paella and churros. Paella Republica serves both, offering a range of paella’s to suit a range of tastes. I opted for the seafood paella and within a short moment was presented with a lovely array of seafood immersed in a fish stock cooked rice with lovely flavour. The seafood was tender and the meal was very hearty, the salad a nice touch to counteract any intenseness from the fish stock. I moved quickly on to dessert and thoroughly enjoyed the light golden brown crispy churros that was lightly dusted with sugar to give just enough sweetness. The churros were enjoyed in lovely liquid dark chocolate which I polished off. This is a lovely little eatery serving a slice of Spain. Yum!
I’ve eaten here several times and I really enjoy the different creations on offer. We ate the latest new creation, chicken lollipop, which is a rival to the honey chilli cauliflower. It was slightly crunchy and immersed in a delicious chilli sauce though it’s not hot. I also enjoyed the lamb cutlets with mint chutney for more flavour, and the light mild but slightly creamy Chicken Murgh Makhmali. It was then on to the curries where I enjoyed the Lamb Dhansak immersed in a mild curry with a touch of chilli which balanced against the plain lentils. The Chicken Achari Murgh carried a back of the palette bite despite being creamy. The goan fish curry immersed in a coconut base curry packed lots of spice and flavour. These were enjoyed with the delicious crunchy on the bottom soft on the top naans. Totally stuffed but satisfied, I’ve got my Indian fix and it was excellent.
Zapfhall (translation: beer hall) serves beer, wine, and all things German in a spacious hall with seating inside and out where you can overlook the buzz of South Terrace in Freo. There are a range of dishes from share plates, hot dogs, to heartier meals. We decided to order mains and share a bit. I chose spaetzle, the German pasta with speck. The pasta was pea sized, soft and tasty though a little plain till you got some speck. It provided a salty burst of flavour and tied together the mushroom, kale and herbs, plus the melted cheese. It’s quite a tasty meal but does get rich so the apple and fennel salad with a slight acidic kick is much welcome. I also had a taste of the veal and chicken schnitzels which were large in size though needed more oomph to the dish. The veal was a little chewy in spots but the tender parts were delicious. However, I preferred the chicken schnitzel which was crunchy and enjoyed with the malt glaze. I also liked the blaukraut (sauerkraut but with red cabbage) and the potato rosti hidden underneath the schnitzel.
The Red Chair Cafe offers breakfast and coffee in the morning and a range of items for lunch, mainly of a Vietnamese, Asian theme. I ordered the bun bo zao and received a big bowl of yum. Delicious soft soothing rice noodles mixed in with pickled cucumber strips, thinly sliced carrots, tender slices of beef, and the sweet salty spicy mix of the dressing to add that flavour punch and life to the dish making it so enjoyable. I really like the crushed peanuts on top which add texture. The meal is light but filling. I can see why this place is such a popular choice amongst the lunchtime crowd.

The Standard offers an open spaced venue and a garden out the back to enjoy an alcoholic beverage or too and munch on some dishes from their tapas menu. I chose the garlic clams which were tasty and thoroughly enjoyed in a delicious rich creamy sauce with garlic and chives. The toasted sourdough slices were used to mop up the sauce from the clam shells and then I proceeded to clean the dish. Then it was on to dessert and I settled on the passion parfait with lychees which was a stunning dish. The flavour of the passiionfruit comes through in the smooth light parfait but without the sweetness, just melting in your mouth. The dehydrated lychees carry all the flavour but without the sharp sweetness from the fresh version. I particularly enjoyed this element and it pairs perfectly with the parfait presenting delicious summer flavours. The gel carries more lychee flavour, moistness, and a slight burst of sweetness but is well controlled. The caramelised glass shards add a touch of richness via the sesame seeds and all elements tie together in producing an excellent finish to the meal.
