Arc Of Iris - Deep Fried Camembert

The menu at Arc of Iris takes on a slightly Asian slant. I started with the deep fried camembert which was excellent. A golden brown crispy crumb encasing soft gooey camembert, aided by a sharp salad and the sweetness from the fruit coulis. The twice cooked duck was superb. Lovely sweet Asian sauce with a much too generous serve of super tender duck made for a very filling dish. While the Asian salad and steamed rice helped take the edge of the duck, it’s sheer quantity caused the dish to become a little monotonous. Fantastic dish though. Lastly, the dark chocolate fondant was slightly overdone with no oozing chocolate and was a little dry. However, the lovely flavour of the vanilla ice cream saved the day and provided the perfect partner. For the price, excellent value, excellent food, lovely service in a lovely restaurant. You must book ahead as it’s pretty busy.


Laundry 43 - Smoked Wagyu Beef Ravioli

Laundry 43 offers patrons a share plate style menu but one can still dine solo. I ordered the special of the day, the smoked Wagyu beef ravioli. The presentation was excellent and the regional produce exuded flavour and freshness along with the delicious meaty sauce. I wasn’t that impressed with the ravioli filling which had a consistency like quiche and contained less Wagyu beef than I was expecting. The meaty Wagyu flavour was also overpowered by the sourness of the pickling juices of the onions. The ravioli was a lovely consistency and service was very friendly. For the price, I expected a little more and expected to be comfortably full.

Sushi offers high quality Japanese fine dining in a lovely setting with excellent service. I really enjoyed the quality and flavour of the food, but felt that the serving size was not commensurate with the price for several dishes. With the Dimmi $50 voucher, it made the dinner closer to value for money. We started off with the chef’s selection of sashimi which is really delicious with a dab of wasabi and soy sauce to kick the night off. I also enjoyed the assorted tempura but prefer a thicker crunchier batter but the juicy prawns were perfectly cooked and full of flavour. The melt in your mouth light golden brown coloured crab balls mixed in that interesting sauce was also delicious. I also particularly liked the flavour of the grill that was imparted into the succulent duck breast with a flavoursome sauce. We also tried the chicken, prawn and Jamon, and beef tongue skewers which were really delicious with the accompanying sauces. And finally, we had the nigiri sushi to round out the mains. For dessert, the dessert platter offers just about every dessert on the menu in a smaller serve which allows you to try each one. They’re all really delicious with the highlight being Sushia’s signature dish, the tofu cheesecake. The mango sorbet, chocolate cubes, and chocolate fondant also rate a special mention. Delicious.


The Laneway Lounge - Prawn Popcorn with Chilli Mayo

This classy 1940’s New Orleans venue offers patrons a seat at the bar, the high tables, private booths, and also has a live music room for local and international performances, particularly of a jazz or blues variety. Whiskey is on the drinks menu along with all kinds of beverages, and in keeping with the full table service available, the tapas menu offers something more than just the average bar food. I particularly enjoyed the golden brown popcorn prawn which was rich but had the edge taken off by the spicy chilli mayo. I also really enjoyed the chunks of pork belly surrounded by a light deep fried dough and coated ever so slightly with a maple syrup and bourbon glaze. These donuts were really something. While the desserts are quite pricey, I did have the amaretti & caramel custard tart which has the most delicious sensation! The palette cleansing banana gelato is very tasty but the rest of the dessert has elements which don’t quite gel well. I was pretty full and really liked the feel of the venue and the delicious food. A great place to stop by for any occasion, especially pre-theatre.


Bam Bam Boo - Char Siew Bao and Panfried Pork Bun

If you really can’t be bothered walking 5 minutes to Northbridge and picking any number of yum cha restaurants on Roe St and beyond, then pop into Bambamboo for yum cha instead. The ordering process is convoluted and you need to know what dishes and how much you will order upfront, but apart from that, the food is pretty tasty and comparable to what you would get at a yum cha restaurant. I’d still favour going to a yum cha restaurant for the authentic deal and you can also keep ordering till you’re full, but Bambamboo is a solid alternative. I really loved the pork belly and enjoyed the BBQ pork buns, panfried pork buns with heaps of chilli oil, and the pumpkin sago pudding for dessert. Takeaway also available.


Chez Pierre - Poached Pear

Chez Pierre’s Taste of France took me to Bourges where I started with a wintery warming pumpkin veloute with a touch of spice for added depth of flavour. The pork belly was super tender and carried a honey glaze which added a nice sweetness. It sat atop very creamy, mushroom infused, rich risotto which was excellent. After cleansing the palette with the refreshing apple sorbet, a chunk of fillet of beef was presented. Super tender, it combined nicely with the well controlled strong flavours of the Roquefort blue cheese sauce. The thickly cut zucchini slices was well cooked and the thickly cut frites were perfectly seasoned and very enjoyable. Dessert presented a tender poached pear with vanilla flecked ice cream which was rich and creamy. Along with the hot chocolate sauce, it certainly added a yum factor. The biscuit base and brittle added crunch to the dish in contrast to the smooth elements of the pear, ice cream, and whipped cream. Another fine French meal and dining experience.


Bulgogi BBQ Restaurant - Seafood Pancake

An unassuming restaurant on Hay Street in East Perth, the restaurant filled up fast and several opted to utilise the gas stoves at their table to barbecue the raw ingredients on the menu. I chose the cooked dishes and started with a tasty crispy seafood pancake with condiments of spicy kimchi, bean sprouts, bean curd, and a sour sauce which help to counteract the richness of the pancake. I then had a hot plate of steaming finely sliced beef bulgogi. Tender and very tasty, the bulgogi carries a lovely flavour of the marinade which I enjoyed with steamed rice.


Brotzeit - Bavarian Sausages, Pretzle, Sweet Mustard

I was back again for another visit to the German restaurant, Brotzeit. On today’s visit I had their traditional Bavarian sausages, weisswurst, which came with a freshly made pretzel and sweet mustard. The herb specked smooth sausages were really delicious, taking on a subtle flavour, but really tasty. I liked the pretzel, especially the salty bits, with the sweet mustard which helped to take the meaty edge off the meal. Also aiding the cause is a side of buttered spatzle (like a German pasta) which was pretty tasty but needed a dash of seasoning. This is another really filling meal which resulted in me eating a very light dinner.


Chez Pierre - Beef Cheek Pie

Chez Pierre’s Lyon themed menu for the week piqued my interest and had me on the phone in a jiffy. The night started with a lovely roasted tomato veloute followed by rich succulent beef cheek encased in puff pastry. The pie was delicious and the sauce was lovely but I would have liked a little more sauce. After the refreshing lychee sorbet cleansed the inside of my palette, the confit duck leg with sautéed potatoes and broccolini proceeded to blow me away. I can’t fault the duck. Absolutely superb! Flavoursome, perfectly seasoned, oozing with flavour and with the delicious sauce, what a dish. The unassuming orange tart was carefully put together with the refreshing summer mango and mint compote, partnering with the slightly tart cherries to combat the richness of the delicious orange tart with whipped cream. While the prior visit set the bar to a very high standard, today’s dinner didn’t reach the same heights but I was far from disappointed. Another excellent dinner.
