Beer and Skewer serve a variety of skewered meats Chinese style, dim sum, and a range of traditional Chinese dishes. I ordered one cumin chicken skewer ($2.50) which contained tender succulent chicken with a delicious cumin flavour. I also got one beef satay skewer ($2.50) but the beef was a little chewy though the satay sauce was lovely. For mains I chose the beef noodle soup ($12) which was like a big bowl of pho. The beef was like that from a chunk of roast but sliced thinly. It didn’t have much flavour. The broth was quite tasty though and started to soften the beef and the noodles. The noodles were quite chunky and not bad. Very filling dish, a real winter warmer, pretty good. Loved the cumin chicken skewer but you can get better noodle soup dishes (think Mr Bun for example).
A visit to Chez Pierre trying their Taste of France range never disappoints. We were treated to food from the town of Beaume. It started with a delicious risotto with the flavour of the crab permeating throughout the creamy risotto. The crab and prawn bisque provided plenty of flavour and richness, but this was offset by the tomato and meatiness from the squid stuffed pork balls. The squid was a tad chewy but the subtle herb flavoured super soft pork meatballs were delicious. A highlight of the night. That was followed by a beef cheek which cut as tender as the soft creamy mash that lay underneath. This was melt in your mouth stuff, the beef combining superbly with a red wine full bodied sauce, slight saltiness from the bacon-like lardo, sweet shallots, and soft mushrooms. To finish the heavy meal, a light dessert was required and millefeuille fitted the bill. Easy on the stomach, but delicious on the tongue, the crispy layers of puff pastry encased Chantilly cream and a delicious creme patisserie, enjoyed with fresh strawberries. I particularly liked the tart raspberry coulis. Amazing!

I was expecting a visit to the Brisbane Hotel to be the usual pub food but was pleasantly surprised that the menu is a little more upmarket. I took a particular liking to the chicken liver parfait and also enjoyed the arancini balls. The sausage rolls seem a bit out of place on any menu but were tasty but the beef cheek taco’s were a bit on the bland side and didn’t go with the creamy guacamole. For mains, I throughly enjoyed the confit duck leg where a decent portion of juicy, tender, and perfectly seasoned duck is presented. I enjoyed each and every bite which carried moistness and flavour. I also loved the mushroom filling in the tortellini which carried a real earthiness, though, I’m not sure why the tops of the tortellini were crisped. The ensuing comedy show at Lazy Susan’s is fantastic and if you love comedy then I recommend a visit and definitely recommend you get the duck.
