Cuisine: Korean, Mexican
Location: Perth CBD – Equus Arcade
I continue my journey trying different Korean restaurants and today’s visit to Mix is a Korean fusion with Mexican which should be interesting. I’m not completely convinced of fusion and sometimes it’s a real mixed bag. However, here they’re taking the things like Mexican tacos and salsa and adding a Korean twist on the filling like spicy chicken or bulgogi. They also have burritos, rice bowls, and quesadillas. The eatery is located inside Equus Arcade and the venue is quite small but you can get takeway. I placed an order and was given those buzzer things which buzz when your food is ready. The wait wasn’t long.
3 Tacos for $13 – Bulgogi, Spicy Chicken, and Pork
I was quite looking forward to the tacos on the menu and the website hasn’t updated with a 3 taco option available. You can choose from bulgogi, pork, spicy chicken, fish, and tofu. Aside from sour cream and lettuce, you can also choose a salsa for each: tomato, tropical, cucumber, roasted. I chose bulgogi, pork, and spicy chicken tacos for my fillings and got the tomato, tropical, and cucumber salsa.
The corn tortillas are soft and have the corn flavour but carries little flavour other from that. That’s where the Korean fillings come in. I really liked all of them with special mention to the bulgogi and spicy chicken. There is a bit of a chilli kick from the salsas and fillings I imagine which add further punch to each bite. Fortunately the sour cream adds a cooling effect and a slight creaminess. The mix of flavours is excellent, a true example of fusion that works and tastes great. Within 30 minutes I had ordered, got my meal, and enjoyed it before leaving. It is a very messy affair so the serviettes provided are a welcome relief. Yummy!
Mix Food Review Summary
Verdict: Mix presents a fusion of Korean and Mexican cuisine through tacos, burritos, and quesadillas. I had 3 tacos with fillings of beef bulgogi, spicy chicken, and pork. I also had the option of choosing a salsa and got tomato, tropical, and cucumber. Each bite was delicious and full of flavour. There’s a bit of a chilli kick and the salsa’s add additional flavour while the sour cream cools things down. Really tasty, service is quick but the eating is messy! Serviettes provided are much needed. A cheap eat that hits the spot.
