Location: Subiaco – Rokeby Rd
Last week I was too early so I headed this week in the afternoon to Whisk Creamery. Winter has suddenly taken a backseat with blue sky and bright warm sunshine. Perfect weather for ice cream. It was pretty packed whilst I queued but a table became available by the time I placed my order for a caramel sandwich.
Whisk Creamery is a relatively new dessert bar to Subiaco in the main street of Rokeby Road run by a couple of brothers. They offer hand made gelato in a variety of flavours but there are also interesting desserts, sundaes, smoothies, and milkshakes to also enjoy. The desserts can be customised as well with additional elements available for an additional price. The mantra is to source the freshness produce to produce soft serve gelato the way it should be made drawing upon the Italian methods of past generations.
Caramel Sandwich $13
A cronut sandwiched with salted caramel gelato, homemade salted caramel sauce and topped with whipped cream and more salted caramel sauce
Within a short time of taking my seat my order was in front our me waiting to be devoured. A cronut cut in half filled with soft creamy salted caramel gelato and topped with sweetened cream and salted caramel sauce. A bit awkward to eat once you cut into it as the gelato oozes out of the sides. The cronut is slightly crunchy and firm but very tasty. I like the gelato too. It’s light and creamy with a lovely light salted caramel flavour. I guess it would be better appreciated on it’s own but there’s plenty of gelato to enjoy. The sweetened cream with a touch of salted caramel is also tasty and certainly makes this a naughty dessert. The salted caramel sauce on the side starts to mix with the melted gelato and is delicious. It’s quite a sizeable dessert to finish so come with room in your stomach. And then relish like I did.
Whisk Creamery Food Review Summary
Verdict: The desserts are a bit pricey but that’s the price you pay for indulgence. The caramel sandwich is delicious, a lovely cronut sandwiching the smooth creamy salted caramel gelato which goes down a treat. The whipped cream with salted caramel sauce is delicious and the dessert, while filling, is not sickening or dominated by too much caramel. I can see this being a hit in summer but any weather is good for gelato, right?
