After stopping by recently for lunch and enjoying the delicious Italian fare offered at Maruzzella Restaurant, it was time for another visit but for dinner.
Calamari fritti $15
Crispy fried baby squid served with tartare sauce, lemon and fresh salad
It was worth starting with an entree to share and something like the calamari seemed like an excellent choice. The calamari carried a really delicious flavour, perfectly seasoned, cooked well but just a tad chewy. It had a light golden brown colour and nice crunch, served with some greens and tartare sauce which was a yum way to start.
Ravioli ricotta e spinaci $23.90
Handmade ravioli filled with fresh ricotta and spinach served with cherry tomatoes, garlic and basil
After a more than filling meal at lunch, I needed something lighter. The ravioli was the perfect choice and presented 10 soft pasta filled parcels of soothing ricotta and spinach, accompanied by a delicious flavoursome energectic tomato sauce. The pasta was a little thick for my liking though was tasty. The sauce really took it to another level and made the dish more special. Something about the sauce made it burst with energy and it really enliven the ravioli. The touch of balsamic glaze also added a nice sweet element to the dish.
Saltimbocca alla romana $28.90
Chicken breast stuffed with prosciutto and served with sage, green vegetables and romana sauce
I had a small taste of this – well cooked chicken surounded by proscuitto in a lovely sauce with veggies.
Fettucini al ragout di agnello $24
Braised lamb shoulder, salted ricotta, chilli and napoli sauce.
I had a small taste of this dish too. Al dente, firm and a tad chewy fettucini, encased by a tasty moist sauce served with chunks of tear apart lamb. Delicious.
Layered coffee-flavoured biscuit, mascarpone cheese and cream
Last time’s visit I loved the chocolate pannacotta so this time it was time to try the tiramisu. A generous serving once again greeted me and after the first bite, I was secretly glad I could enjoy plenty. The tiramisu was pretty light and moist, had a lovely dusting of high quality cocoa, and was so delicious. The strawberry and mint provide a refreshing contrast.
Maruzzella Food Review Summary
Verdict: After the setting the bar really high on my last visit, the challenge is to sustain it. Tonight didn’t reach the same highs but the food was still delicious. I loved the flavours of the perfectly seasoned calamari but it was a tad chewy. The ravioli contained a lovely soft ricotta and spinach filling and the tomato sauce was bursting with energy and flavour which took it to another level. The tiramisu was also delicious and a lovely way to finish off the night with a generous serving once again, of light moist tiramisu. I’m really glad to see a quality Italian offering in East Perth.
