Grand Bar and Bistro – 18 Mar 2016

Cuisine: Modern Australian
Location: Perth CBD, foyer of Central Park

We had a team lunch at the Grand Bar & Bistro to welcome a new colleague and farewell another. I’ve eaten here on several occasions, including the upstairs restaurant which is excellent, but we were here for something less formal and more casual so the bar area suited us fine. Except there were no tables so we went to the semi-basement level which is quiet and secluded and has comfy booths to squish into. We each ordered at the bar and waited for our food to arrive. I decided to have two entrees instead of a main as I’d tried a few of the items.

Salt and pepper squid, mesculin, thai sweet chilli $14.50

Grand Bar & Bistro - Salt & Pepper Squid

I’d last visited here with some former work colleagues and I’m sure one of them ordered the salt & pepper squid which looked appealing so I though I’d give that a go. The squid is super tender and lightly coated with a light batter and perfectly seasoned to produce a flavoursome dish. There’s a touch of sweet chilli sauce to add further flavour and liven up the dish, but the sauce with the salad works perfectly in dressing the salad and flavouring the squid. Quite a decent serving and really delicious.

Timber hill pork belly, seared scallops, parsnip puree $16

I like pork belly so ordering this dish was an easy choice. I did check with the waitstaff if these two entrees would be enough food for one person and they said yes. In the end, it was plenty of food for one person and I was really hungry. The crunchy pork belly is really delicious and tender, it’s everything pork belly should be. Nicely seasoned, crunchy crackling, tender pork, well rendered fat, very yum. Alongside the pork belly is a delicious smooth parsnip puree which adds a lovely earthiness and the sauce is delicious though I would have liked more of it. It goes really well with the pork belly. I also liked the lovely succulent scallops. A very filling but satisfying meal.

Below are some other dishes my work colleagues ordered.

Grand Bar & Bistro - Grand Sharing Plate

Grand sharing plate – turkish bread and house made dips, chorizo, scallops, pork belly, olives

Grand Bar & Bistro - Grand Burger

Grand burger – pitch black angus beef, cheddar cheese, cos lettuce, tomato, fried onions, tomato relish, steak fries

Grand Bar & Bistro - Beef Pie

Beef Pie, Salad, Fries

Grand Bar and Bistro Food Review Summary

Verdict: The multifaceted Grand Bar and Bistro is the perfect venue for a variety of occasions. Upstairs is the restaurant where you can enjoy an intimate dinner, downstairs is a bar to grab a few drinks and enjoy some well crafted dishes. To the far left in the deck area is a cafe to enjoy a lighter lunch in casual surrounds. We dined in a semi basement area associated with bar and I ordered two entrees for lunch. The first was a delicious salt & pepper squid which was super tender and perfectly seasoned. The sweet chilli sauce dressed the salad and added additional flavour to the squid. The second entree presented crunchy topped pork belly which was tender and delicious with the sauce provided, but I wanted more sauce. The earthy parsnip puree is an excellent partner to the pork and I also loved the succulent scallops. A very well crafted meal and very filling. Satisfied.
