Being a food blogger has it’s rewards with the odd invite here and there to events and new restaurant openings which brings me to Alfred’s Pizzeria, where I was invited to get a sneak peak of the small bar and pizzeria before they officially open their doors to the public on Tuesday 26th April. Located opposite the State Buildings towards the corner of Barrack Street and St George’s Terrace, lies this hidden gem underground the Perth CBD.
Formerly a record shop, the intimate space has been revamped to reflect an American gangster style hangout which goes with the theme of an American Italian club taking you back to the 80s and 90s. There’s guns, pizza, alcohol and rock n roll, with the venue adorned with memorabilia from the US, wall paper from the 60s, fake cash, weapons, handcuffs, and items encased in trapdoors.
Seating up to 30 people, there’s a large selection of alcoholic beverages to choose from and lots of pizzas on the menu. They also offer pizza by the slice which presents a quarter of a pizza for $5. If you’re really into cheese, there’s also a cheese board available.
Alfred’s Pizzeria Menu
The pizzas are made from flour imported from Italy and are proved for 48 hours while the tomato sauce uses organic tomatoes and the quality of the process and ingredients shows. If you’re really into chilli, there are a range of chilli sauces available ranging from levels 1 to 11, including death sauce so let the chef know if you want that chilli hit on your pizza. The menu offers several pizza varieties including vegetarian options. You choose a pizza and then choose a sauce:
- Rosso: A rich tomato sauce
- Biancha: A delicate cheese base
Alfred’s Pizza kindly treated me to a couple of pizzas so it was a tough choice picking two. I went for the following:
Rocky Pizza – Italian Sausage, Pepperoni, Chilli, Basil with a Bianca Cheese Sauce
The pizza base is light, crisp and has a crunchy crust with delicious ingredients. The pepperoni is delicious and the hit of chilli is evident and had me reaching for some water! The pizza’s gooey cheese sauce adds a nice contrast in the background to the pepperoni and chilli. I ate half of this pizza and half of the next and it’s nice and light, not heavy and stuffed with toppings. There’s still ample toppings but the balance and quantity is just right to enjoy a slice and let the ingredients shine through.
Great Scott Pizza – Garlic Mushrooms, Spinach, Truffled Ricotta with a Biancha Cheese Sauce
This pizza was my favourite out of the two. A lovely light garlic flavour combines with the earthy soft mushrooms, soft ricotta, slightly rich Biancha cheese sauce, but it’s the truffle oil which adds the most delicious flavour and ties all the ingredients together, producing a most enjoyable experience with each bite. I really really liked this pizza. So yum!
A big thank you to Michael, Chef Ben and the team at Alfred’s Pizzeria for inviting me along to experience the latest new offering to Perth. Opening to the public on Tuesday 26th April, Alfred’s Pizzeria is open 7 days a week from 3pm – midnight and on Fridays, 12pm to midnight. I really enjoyed the pizza’s and will be back to try the other items on the menu.
