Location: Highgate – corner Beaufort & Mary Streets
Side Door BBQ is located just down Mary Street, off Beaufort Steet, where Mary St Bakery is. Walking in, the interior is very open and has a warehouse feel with no ceiling, concrete floors, but lots of tables and booths, pretty relaxed and casual. Specialising in American barbecue meats I was keen to see the fare on offer. Since traveling to the US, several American style restaurants have appeared in Perth but few have been able to successfully represent the American cuisine in the area of meats, pulled pork being a major culprit. American barbecue is meat cooked long and slow, smoked and enjoyed with sauces, rubs, or marinades as part of adding additional flavour.
You have the choice of obtaining a serve of different prepared meats and choosing sides. Brisked, pulled pork, and ribs are some examples of the meats on offer and sides include cornbread, collared greens, and Mac & cheese to name a few. Sandwiches, starters, mains, salads, share platters, dessert, drinks and shakes round out the menu. They also have alcoholic drinks on offer too. They’re open for lunch and dinner but check their site for opening times.
Beef Brisket ($10), Pulled Pork ($10), Cornbread Mini Loaf with Maple Butter ($10)
I chose the brisket, pulled pork and cornbread. I was also eying the desserts – keylime and pecan pies on offer. I started with the pulled pork and first bite in I was very pleased. Finally, a place that does justice to American cuisine and has finally presented pulled pork the way it’s supposed to be. Quite tender though just a tad dry (maybe being a tad critical), juicy moist sauces and seasoning giving that unmistakable flavour that I enjoyed in the US. I really loved it and couldn’t get enough but I had to stop myself and try the other items on the plate.
The beef brisket is super tender and cuts like butter despite the serrated knife. One side of beef is quite fatty but I like this bit because it’s juicy and has lots of flavour. The other part of the bread is far more meatier but still tender. Really juicy and succulent, you can taste all the meat juices but it was lacking a sauce. Fortunately I spied a bunch of sauces to the far end of my booth. I chose a little of the expresso BBQ sauce which sounded unusual. It livens up the meat and certainly does carries a coffee flavour which is a little unusual with meat but tasty. I preferred the standard barbecue sauce which is yum. All the sauces, like the food prepared, is homemade.
I moved on to the cornbread where a mini loaf sat with maple butter. It’s quite large and after cutting a slice and biting in I really was enjoying the flavours. It’s a bit on the rich side but I didn’t notice at first with all the meat I was consuming. The meal is aided by some pickled veggies and potato crisps to break up the meat fest. I did check with the waitstaff how much would be enough but when presented with all this food, I kind of felt anxious wondering how I would finish all this food, especially after tasting it. Fortunately the table in front of me asked for their food to be packed away so I got an out from trying to mow down all this food. It was a little too late though as I’m really stuffed and dessert will have to wait. Rather disappointed but very satisfied.
Side Door BBQ Food Review Summary
Verdict: I’m pleased to say Perth finally has a restaurant which does justice to American barbecued meats, prepared the way it should be and tastes just like it does in the US. I ordered a serve of pulled pork which was fantastic. Tender, moist and coated in delicious spices the pulled pork is so delicious. I also ordered a serve of the beef brisket which cuts like butter and oozes meat juices and flavour. This went down a treat and the homemade sauces on the table can be utilised to add more flavour to each bite. I also got a serve of the cornbread mini loaf with maple butter which was so yum and enjoyable. I really loved the food and the New York couple running this place is doing America proud. The serves are, if anything, overly generous and exceptional value for money, so don’t order too much and if in a bind, you can ask for it to be packed away. Can’t wait to try the other items on the menu.
Recommendation: Highly Recommend
