Holiday – China: Xi’an

Tuesday 17 May

After getting off the train it was a short ride to the hotel where our rooms happened to be ready which was very fortunate since we arrived well before check in. Time for a shower before heading to breakfast.

A few of us decided to head out for a walk before meeting everyone for an orientation walk.

The Xi’an City Walls spans some 14 kms with 4 entrances, towers and defence mechanisms. Several of us took a bicycle ride around the walks taking in the sights.

After that it was off to the Muslim Quarter which is close by the Drum Tower.

The Muslim Quarter is a hive of activity with lots of eats but our tour guide said the hygiene of certain items isn’t good. For instance, stay away from deep fried food because they reuse the oil.

After that we went to Xi’an’s famous dumplings restaurant where they serve 12 different types of dumplings and each type may be formed into shapes representing the filing. Before we could even start a whole bunch of side dishes were served. Heaps of food and really tasty dumplings.

Today we’re off to see Xi’an’s most famous attraction, The Terracotta Warriors Army. It’s world heritage listed and also the 8th wonder of the world. It was discovered accidentally in 1974 when farmers were digging a well.

Terracotta warriors
They’ve carefully excavated the site and unearthed 4 pits, but the emperor died at the time he ordered the construction of this attraction so the fourth pit was empty. The third pit has unfinished people.

When the emperor died, people tried to destroy it by burning it down which is why the wooden roofs look like waves and black ash was found in the site.
Terracotta warriors
The attraction is quite stunning. Each warrior’s face is different. Works are still continuing some 50 years later.

We also went to the exhibition mall which had statues of different warriors.
