Holiday – Hong Kong 2016


Saturday 21 May

After waking up at 4:30am to catch an early flight, I was glad to finally land in Hong Kong and be in Kowloon.
I’m staying in Hong Kong to break up the long flight to Perth but I’m also here for a specific food which I’ll get to later.
First up, I’m really hungry so I need some lunch and need it fast.
Close by the hotel is a place which I’ve walked past on numerous occasions when I was last in Hong Kong about a year ago, but never noticed they served roast goose.
Barbecued and roast meats are a specialty within Hong Kong so I’m more than happy to get a small serve of roast goose with rice.

The roast goose at Hung Lee Kitchen on Prat Avenue in TST was pretty tasty, nice and moist and juicy with delicious meat and perfect with the rice. I wanted a reasonably light meal for lunch to save room for my next meal.

I spent the rest of the day walking around and browsing shops before the tiredness started to kick in which meant it’s time for the dish I came here for: Hong Kong Style French Toast.

Last year I attended the Hong Kong Foodie Tasting Tour which was excellent and one I highly recommend going to if you’ve never been to Hong Kong. It’s an excellent introduction to various foods that is typical of Hong Kong. You also receive a leaflet of the places you will visit, plus recommendations to other restaurants.
It’s here where they mentioned Hong Kong Style French Toast so I chose to visit Lan Fong Yuen which is located at Shop 304D, Shun Tak Centre, 168-200 Connaught Road Central, Sheung Wan. Easily accessible from the metro, just follow the signs (I think exit D off memory and go up the escalators and then turn immediately right and there is Lan Fong Yuen.

I waited patiently and then was presented with the French Toast with a good knob of coconut butter and then you pour as much or as little of the thick maple syrup over and tuck in.
Wow! Definitely worth the wait, I absolutely loved it! So so delicious, I seriously considered ordering another serving but that would be greedy. Instead I enjoyed the milk tea and was certainly enjoying life at that moment. It’s been a pretty long day so while I had planned to go to the Temple Street Night Markets for dinner, it’s time for a nice hot shower and some sleep.
 

Sunday 22 May

I have an afternoon flight which means I get a half day to explore more of Hong Kong. Except I was pretty keen on a long sleep in and finally dragged myself out of bed and then started wandering the Kowloon area in search of something to sate my appetite. I wasn’t really sure what I wanted and hoped to stumble upon a dim sum place but didn’t find anything. I also was disappointed that the shops open late as one of the shopping malls I entered along with lots of other people pretty much had closed shops. I decided to give things a miss, pick up my luggage from the hotel, and catch the train to the airport and grab food there instead. I decided to pop into Maxim’s Jade Garden in Terminal 1 which is upstairs and located before the security check in. They serve dim sim among other things so after specifying the quantity of the dishes I wanted, I waited patiently, with my stomach grumbling.

The peach and lychee refresher looked appealing so I got that and it was just as described in the menu description – refreshing and really delicious.

I thought I’d give the turnip and preserved meat cake a go which was quite good but on the rich side.

The pork dumplings looked interesting but weren’t as good as I was expecting. Glad to try a different type of dumpling though.

I had to grab a serve of egg tarts before I go. These were pretty good but could be far better. I also grabbed some egg custard buns which I had a couple left over and were the perfect snack on the 7 hr flight back to Perth. Pretty good dim sum but I’ve eaten better and it’s on the pricey side, though service is excellent. Pretty stuffed now, way too much food but glad I came here. Back to the normality of everyday life.

Accommodation – Butterfly on Prat

I stayed here on my last two visits to Hong Kong and chose to stay here again. It’s an excellent location in Kowloon, close to the TST MRT, peninsula, and Nathan Road. The staff are really friendly and helpful and the rooms are nice and clean and comfortable and spacious. They also provide a free loan smartphone allowing you to make calls or take with you around Hong Kong for navigation or just as a guide to show you what’s to do in Hong Kong. Very handy if you’re here for a short stay and don’t want to buy a sim card or turn on roaming.
