Had lunch across the road at Society Bar & Kitchen, inside the Mantra on Murray Hotel. They have a standard menu but also offer an express lunch option of 2 courses for $19, with lots to choose from under each course. I chose the confit duck in brik pastry for entree and the cajun shrimp tortilla for mains. I really loved the confit duck which was absolutely amazing! Such delicious succulent tender and well flavour duck encased by a delicious crunchy pastry. I relished each bite. We were told the tortilla is filling and it certainly was a generous serve. I like the light crunch from the tortilla and pretty tasty filling. I didn’t care too much for the shrimp though. The tortilla wasn’t too bad but no match for the duck. Several people at the table chose the steak sandwich and by all reports it was really tasty and enjoyed by all. If you’re after a quick and relatively cheap meal which is still tasty, has good service, and is quiet and relaxing, stopping by here isn’t a bad choice.
Fraser’s Restaurant is an excellent classy venue that played host to a work function. With beautiful views of the Perth City by night and a large area with lots of room for tables, a stage, and a dance floor, the venue caters to a variety of events. I expected a high standard of cuisine and while the food was well executed in technique, it was let down by the balance of elements and in flavours at times. The food was uninspiring, too safe and didn’t give the diner anything special from the experience to warrant a return visit.
The goat’s cheese gnocchi was an interesting creation but the flavour of the goat’s cheese didn’t shine through. The tartness of the roasted pepper sugo, however, was an excellent element to pair and compliment the dish. A cave man sized chunk of perfectly cooked rib eye was served for mains but was really plain and unimaginative with a well cooked potato, caramelised onion for some sweetness, and a delicious jus to add flavour. Such a dish doesn’t need to wow but it needs some creativity rather than the pedestrian effort served up here. The sides were contrasting, a very standard salad which one could better at anyone’s home, and some really delicious smashed potatoes with rosemary and garlic. For dessert, Fraser’s have their take on an Eton Mess and this version was promising, with lovely vanilla ice cream, smashed meringue, blueberries and cream. I like cream but there was so much here it was sickening and I left the dessert. The last thing served was a cheese platter paired with crackers and fruit bread, which was a lovely finish to the meal.
Very generous in quantity, I certainly didn’t go home hungry, but was disappointed they couldn’t have lifted the balance of flavours to match the service and standard of the venue. I’m not sure if Fraser’s has fallen into one of those venues around the world which offer amazing views but can’t offer the food fitting for what you’re paying for.
How did you start your weekend? I popped into La Belle Sweets being a lover of patisseries and baked goods. Situated in a quiet suburban area of Lathlain, several people drop by for a coffee, a baked item or a sweet treat. Looking at the display cabinet had me drooling over what I should get. There’s lots to choose from and they also have hot items like quiches for example. We’ve got cronuts, now they have cruffins – a croissant type pastry formed into the shape of a muffin and filled with something special. With several fillings to choose from, I chose a cruffin with a passionfruit and mandarin cream and really enjoyed this delicious creation. The croissant is firmer and has a slight salty tinge like those in Paris. The cream filling is tasty but swings from too overpowering to perfect. The mandarin and passionfruit flavour work extremely well together. I also had a delicious croissant filled with matcha cream. I’m not sure if they meant to overcook the croissant but it adds crunch and the slight smoky flavour contrasts nicely with the rich matcha (green tea) flavoured cream. Yum yum yum.
I couldn’t wait till the afternoon and dove into the creme brulee Danish. Lovely crispy flaky pastry, delicious vanilla flecked custard, soft apple cubes hiding underneath. Very yum! They didn’t have a name for the last item picked up, I call it an almond chocolate gateau, but it has an almond layer followed by a chocolate ganache, hazelnuts and chocolate cream, topped with a white macaron and silver. Pretty good though the different elements and flavour need a bit more balance. Some interesting creations, excellent execution, just need a little more work on balancing the flavours. If you’re local, definitely a spot to swing by but get there early as the items disappear fast.
The Malt Supper Club is a late night supper venue serving food into the early hours of the morning (3am). Available for private functions, hens night and the like the venue has several private rooms, booths, a large open space that can accommodate a dance floor or a long table degustation, as well as an upstairs area. Aimed at a mature clientele, the venue has an interesting feel from a bygone era but still maintaining a link to the present day as seen via the many sleek bars.
A new chef straight from the UK, Stephen Rowe, has 35yrs of experience and was waiting to try his new creations on us. The night featured 5 dishes over the course of the night, including drinks. First off was bruschetta and this had loads of crunch but it was the caramelised balsamic vinegar which stole the show with lovely sweet tones to compliment the creamy feta, red onion, tomato and basil. Next was golden brown arancini balls filled with soft risotto and gooey stringy cheese and delicious shredded pork. Twice cooked pork belly with a delicious apple jus was the next dish presenting tender flesh, crunchy perfectly salted crackling and thin crispy root vegetable chips. The fourth dish was fish cakes but these weren’t ordinary. A golden brown crunchy crumb encasing smoked cod without being too fishy, the dash of lemon and creamy pea puree were perfect partners to this dish. Lastly, we finished with a thin crunchy tempura batter encasing goat’s cheese, though a tad too salty for my liking. However, the honey orange blossom was a stroke of genius and paired perfectly with the goat’s cheese.
The tapas items available may look simplistic but have been taken to a new level without the pretentiousness. There’s a range of alcoholic drinks to choose from and we were well looked after by the staff. The food is delicious and not short on flavour, subtlety crafted dishes to enjoy late in the night or early hours with friends for company.
I had walked past Honey Creme on my way to work and was wondering what this place was. An international chain originating in South Korea and Taiwan, Perth is the first store for their Australian venture. I made a visit during my lunch break to try some of their premium soft serve ice cream. Available in a cone or cup, there’s plenty of options from the menu to choose from. I selected the unusual sounding Bacon with Chocolate. Bacon goes with anything right? A bit steep in price but what isn’t expensive these days? Delicious creamy soft serve with a very slight honey flavour, the chocolate and subtle touch of saltiness from the bacon balances out any richness. I like the crunch of the bacon bits too. Yum! Screw winter, ice cream is good in any weather!
Great to see an American style pizza joint open up on the popular Beaufort Street strip of eateries. They serve a range of 16″ and 22″ pizzas and also offer the option of half n half which I gladly took up. I placed a takeaway order and picked up a 16″ Big Tony’s Pepperoni pizza on one half and Buffalo Chicken on the other half. I also got a serve of the New York style cheesecake. The pizza is large and a few legs bolted on to the huge pizza box, and I’d have a mini table! Granted it was takeaway and not eaten at it’s optimum, I thought the pepperoni pizza fell a bit short. The pizza has a lovely thin base that holds it’s shape (it’s not floppy) and has a crunchy crust. The pepperoni is tasty with a lovely sprinkling of herbs to add additional flavour, though I found it a bit flat. If cheese is overcooked it becomes chewy and not the kind of chewy with stringy gooey mozzarella. On the other hand, the buffalo chicken is moist and intense. The blue cheese is the first flavour to smack you in the face, though the spiciness comes through as well. The different combination of cheeses create a moistness and soft cheesiness and makes it a really enjoyable pizza. Unfortunately the cheesecake didn’t have it’s seatbelt on and hit the floor, hence the crack in the cheesecake. Pouring the raspberry coulis all over and launching into it, I was pleasantly surprised. The baked New York style cheesecake is a classic and this was so delicious. I loved the creamy but not too rich flavour of the cheesecake and that raspberry coulis helps to balance out the richness. I like the biscuit crumb base. Yum! Very happy. A good pizza offering but needs a little more of a pep in flavour.

Rejoice craft beer lovers! For the very first time punters will be able to buy takeaway serves of Beerland Brewing’s bespoke brews produced at Northbridge Brewing Company, with the launch of Perth City’s first ‘Canimals’.
Canimals are 946ml beer cans filled fresh from the tap and sealed over the bar using a special machine that creates a perfect seam to ensure freshness is locked-in, while baddies like oxygen and light are kept out.
Priced at $15 each, beer lovers can purchase Canimals of the current Beerland range to take home, which includes Pale Ale, Kolsch, Wheat, Lager and IPA.
I haven’t visited Jamie’s for a few year’s now since it first opened. We had lunch here with clients and I notice they have a Super Lunch offer of 2 courses for $25 or 3 courses for $30 which looked tempting. We started with garlic bread which presented a lovely soft bread filled with a delicious herbed garlic butter and garlic chips. I ordered Gennaro’s Famous Porchetta. The pork belly was very tender, though the crackling was a little tricky to cut through. The pork belly was soft and tasty and went well with the salsa verde and herbed garlic and chilli mixture. However, the apple sauce, while nice, dominated the pork and vegetables, to the point I left the sauce to the side. The meal was okay, not to the standard I had enjoyed on my first visits. The flavour balance is a bit off. I don’t think Jamie Oliver would be happy with the dish.
