Mack Daddy's New York Slice - Big Tony Pepperoni and Buffalo Chicken1

Mack Daddy’s New York Slice – 13 Sep 2016

Great to see an American style pizza joint open up on the popular Beaufort Street strip of eateries. They serve a range of 16″ and 22″ pizzas and also offer the option of half n half which I gladly took up. I placed a takeaway order and picked up a 16″ Big Tony’s Pepperoni pizza on one half and Buffalo Chicken on the other half. I also got a serve of the New York style cheesecake. The pizza is large and a few legs bolted on to the huge pizza box, and I’d have a mini table! Granted it was takeaway and not eaten at it’s optimum, I thought the pepperoni pizza fell a bit short. The pizza has a lovely thin base that holds it’s shape (it’s not floppy) and has a crunchy crust. The pepperoni is tasty with a lovely sprinkling of herbs to add additional flavour, though I found it a bit flat. If cheese is overcooked it becomes chewy and not the kind of chewy with stringy gooey mozzarella. On the other hand, the buffalo chicken is moist and intense. The blue cheese is the first flavour to smack you in the face, though the spiciness comes through as well. The different combination of cheeses create a moistness and soft cheesiness and makes it a really enjoyable pizza. Unfortunately the cheesecake didn’t have it’s seatbelt on and hit the floor, hence the crack in the cheesecake. Pouring the raspberry coulis all over and launching into it, I was pleasantly surprised. The baked New York style cheesecake is a classic and this was so delicious. I loved the creamy but not too rich flavour of the cheesecake and that raspberry coulis helps to balance out the richness. I like the biscuit crumb base. Yum! Very happy. A good pizza offering but needs a little more of a pep in flavour.

Decanter - Crispy Pork Belly Bites

Decanter – 18 Aug 2016

Decanter are an American tapas style restaurant and bar not far from Centro Vic Park. We started off with the jalapeno poppers which are large, croquette like, crispy outer shell encasing cheddar cheese and slightly hot jalapeno chilli which is really delicious and supplemented with sour cream to take the edge off. For something milder, the tequila prawns and soft and juicy, enjoyed with a dash of lime juice and the salad. A lovely dish but could have had more flavour. The crispy chicken waffles deliver on the flavour stakes. The crunchy crispy chicken bites are delicious, particularly with the sticky whiskey maple syrup. However, the dish was let down by the thick doughy waffles which should be light and crispy. The crispy pork belly bites have a lovely crispy crackling, soft well cooked meat with the fat rendered down perfectly. The pork belly is excellent, more so with the awesome honey glaze and tasty relish. Lastly, we had pork ribs which present a large quantity of slow cooked tender meat just falling off the bone, immersed in a delicious sweet and slightly sour marinade which adds heaps of flavour and will leave you licking your fingers. Heaps of food and a very enjoyable night out seated in a lovely interior with friendly service to boot.

RoyAl's Chicken & Burgers - Chicken RoyAl Burger

RoyAl’s Chicken & Burgers – 12 Aug 2016

RoyAl’s Chicken & Burgers is a casual dining American styled eatery serving burgers, buttermilk fried chicken, tater tots, mac & cheese, and shakes among American classics on their menu. Not gourmet, but not greasy fast food, this is something in between. Good honest food that will satisfy. I got the chicken RoyAl burger which had a lovely shiny gloss on the top of the bun. Biting in, there’s an actual chunk of perfectly moist chicken thigh covered in a crispy crunchy coating. The fancy sauce does the trick in livening up the lettuce and tomato, making the combination of ingredients in each bite one to enjoy. I also got a side of tater tots which I’ve never eaten before. They’re like nugget sized hash browns, nice and crunchy on the outside, soft potato on the inside. A nice accompaniment to my burger. I was eyeing desserts but the pecan pie is no longer so I went with the cronut filled with chocolate custard, ice cream atop and cherry ripe. Decadent, indulgent, naughty, and so bad, yet so good. Yes, this dessert has it all. The rich buttery croissant with salty explosions and the doughnut feel combines perfectly with the ingredients to work together in creating a tasty morsel with each bite. So yum, so full with a friendly bunch of guys to make the visit one to enjoy.

Frank'd Hot Dogs - Mad Dog Hot Dog and Fries

Frank’d Hot Dogs – 4 Jul 2016

Frank’d Hot Dogs are a new eatery close to the Northbridge Piazza offering patrons a range of crafted hot dogs using locally sourced buns and sausages from Elmar’s in the Swan Valley. I chose the Mad Dog and also a side of fries. Wow, what a generous serving! Lovely lightly toasted soft bun encasing a tasty bratwurst sausage. It’s the spicy tomato sauce and the ground beef which does it for me. I would have liked some more sauce at the bottom of the bun underneath the bratwurst to liven it up even more. The melted cheese and onions along with the other ingredients just work together to create a pretty good flavour combination. I also really enjoyed the perfectly seasoned and spice coated crunchy shoestring fries. Delicious meal.

Decanter - 3 Sliders for $18

Decanter – 30 Jun 2016

Decanter are an American tapas style restaurant and bar not far from Centro Vic Park. I chose the 3 sliders for $18 and enjoyed the typically American cheeseburger, fried chicken with jalapeño, and the pulled pork with BBQ sauce. Each was delicious with lovely combinations of fillings and sauces. The buns are shiny but have slightly crunchy edges and are yum. For dessert I had the popcorn waffles which really should be shared. Yummy caramel coated popcorn, thick tasty waffles, enjoyed with 4 scoops of ice cream and syrup. Tasty, overindulgent, naughty, sugar overload, but I finished it all. Would like to come back for the tapas items. They’re open for lunch on certain days so swing by before you do your shopping.

Varsity Burger - Texan Burger

Varsity Burgers – 24 Jun 2016

Varsity Burgers is the sister shop to Varsity Bar in Nedlands. They serve American style burgers and snack food and are open quite late for that late night meal. They’re situated at the base of an apartment complex and there’s plenty of seating inside and out. I chose the Texan Burger, a double cheeseburger with bacon and BBQ sauce. First bite in and all I can taste is meaty goodness, meat juices, gooey American cheese, the salty hit of bacon, and the crunch from the onions. The beef patty is quite tasty and all the ingredients meld together to form a very delicious burger. It takes a while to eat through all of that but one leaves full and satisfied. The pickle provides some acidity to cut through all that fat! It’s uncomplicated food that just does the job. You have to indulge every now and then.

Chimek - Famous Charcoal Beef Burger

Chimek – 23 Jun 2016

On my last visit I noticed the famous charcoal beef burger which looks weird but it doesn’t taste unusual. The bun is slightly different but tasty, the caramelized onions provides a lovely touch of sweetness, the sauteed mushrooms are juicy, and I love the gooey American cheese. This is a gourmet burger but the big let down for me is the beef patty which lacked flavour. It reminds me of something you get at the supermarket and is of poor quality. I was quite disappointed because it’s an excellent burger with quality ingredients, lacking a beef patty oozing flavour. The wedges are a saving grace. I’m not sure what the other burgers are like, but I absolutely loved their chicken on my last visit so I’d definitely come back for that.

Porkies Barbque - Pulled Pork

Porkies Barbque – 17 Jun 2016

Porkies Barbque is an authentic American barbecue meats eatery headed by two Perth chefs with North American roots and plenty of experience eating and cooking barbecued meats. There are a range of American items to choose from the menu (beef brisket, pulled pork, chicken, ribs, meat platters), including sides (like mac & cheese), desserts, and drinks. I opted for the pulled pork which was moist, juicy and succulent and is perfectly prepared. There’s a lovely flavour from the smoking process, however, the pulled pork is served plain. There’s 3 house sauces at the table to help yourself to, to add the much needed flavour addition and bring out the genius of the pulled pork. I preferred the sweet BBQ sauce, but the boom boom sweet & tangy has a nice kick too. The fried onions and bread allow you to make sandwiches and it goes down a treat. The meat selections also come with a side and there are plenty to choose from. With a sweet tooth, I chose the peach cobbler. I’ve never eaten this before but all I can say is oh yum! A very unique taste, lovely soft peaches down the bottom, delicious cobbler, a little rich at times but the scoop of vanilla ice cream does the trick. Excellent way to finish the meal.

Chimek - Southern Fried Chicken

Chimek – 10 Jun 2016

Chimek is another Korean fried chicken restaurant with a twist. They’ve fused American and Korean cusines in serving a range of fast food items which isn’t only about chicken, but also about burgers (eg black charcoal beef burger), sides (eg cheesy cayenne beer battered chips, Korean popcorn), and desserts. I was walking by and Chimek caught my eye so I popped in and ordered the Southern fried chicken which is what you need on a cold winters day. The chicken dishes are served as wings, but for $4 extra you can have them as boneless chicken pieces which is what I opted for. The chicken was served in a reasonable time and there’s a generous serve. The chicken was crunchy, crispy, not fatty or oily, perfectly cooked, moist chicken on the inside, it’s everything fried chicken should be and Chimek hit the mark. The cayenne and paprika spice is subtle but leaves your lips buzzing! It has quite an effect in delivering the Southern flavour. The wedges on the side are fantastic, crisp on the outside and soft potato on the inside. Tasty right to the end. The coleslaw is also tasty too. The complete meal which delivered and I was very satisfied. I can’t fault the dish.
