Toffee Cafe - Currywurst, Sauerkraut, Mashed Potato

Another visit to Toffee Cafe is a must and I ordered the currywurst with sauerkraut and mashed potato. I decided to grab a table and dine in this time. I’m always happy when I’m pleasantly surprised on the upside as with the first bite today. What a delicious flavoursome sauce, tasty sausage, smooth creamy mashed potato, and a slight touch of acidity from the sauerkraut. What a delightful winter warmer. It might appear as a simple meal but all elements were done perfectly. Extremely satisfied. I also appreciate the warm service and hospitality from the couple that run this place, a trait which is rare in Perth.

Toffee Cafe - Smoked Pork Chop, Potato Mash, and Saukraut

Toffee Cafe is a tiny cafe in Equus Arcade which is easy to miss but you’ll be the one missing out if don’t stop by. With very friendly service, the cafe is open for breakfast and lunch and serves coffee, pretzel rolls, croissant, and German dishes (like goulash and sausages) including daily specials. I visited for lunch and chose the daily special of smoked German chop with sauerkraut and mashed potato, an iced coffee, and an apple slice. I chose takeaway and my meal turned out to be the perfect winter warmer. A delicious tender pork chop was balanced by the slight acidity of the sauerkraut and who doesn’t love creamy mash? Add them all together with the gravy and each bite is just yum yum yum! For the price, this is unbeatable value as a lunchtime option. Having a sweet tooth, it was hard to resist the German apple slice which caught my eye in the display cabinet. I saved this for the 3 o’clock hump and it’s just like a crumble. A lovely delicious sweet treat to get me through the rest of the day. Mmm… Definitely will be coming back to try some of the other menu items.

Zapfhall - German Pasta with Speck

Zapfhall (translation: beer hall) serves beer, wine, and all things German in a spacious hall with seating inside and out where you can overlook the buzz of South Terrace in Freo. There are a range of dishes from share plates, hot dogs, to heartier meals. We decided to order mains and share a bit. I chose spaetzle, the German pasta with speck. The pasta was pea sized, soft and tasty though a little plain till you got some speck. It provided a salty burst of flavour and tied together the mushroom, kale and herbs, plus the melted cheese. It’s quite a tasty meal but does get rich so the apple and fennel salad with a slight acidic kick is much welcome. I also had a taste of the veal and chicken schnitzels which were large in size though needed more oomph to the dish. The veal was a little chewy in spots but the tender parts were delicious. However, I preferred the chicken schnitzel which was crunchy and enjoyed with the malt glaze. I also liked the blaukraut (sauerkraut but with red cabbage) and the potato rosti hidden underneath the schnitzel.

Brotzeit - Bavarian Sausages, Pretzle, Sweet Mustard

I was back again for another visit to the German restaurant, Brotzeit. On today’s visit I had their traditional Bavarian sausages, weisswurst, which came with a freshly made pretzel and sweet mustard. The herb specked smooth sausages were really delicious, taking on a subtle flavour, but really tasty. I liked the pretzel, especially the salty bits, with the sweet mustard which helped to take the meaty edge off the meal. Also aiding the cause is a side of buttered spatzle (like a German pasta) which was pretty tasty but needed a dash of seasoning. This is another really filling meal which resulted in me eating a very light dinner.

Brotzeit - Oven Roasted Pork Knuckle

I’m really excited that the international German restaurant, Brotzeit, has finally opened it’s doors to it’s first restaurant in Perth. The menu offers a variety of dishes catering to all tastes and I ordered the over roasted pork knuckle which was fantastic! The crackling is a golden brown and is crispy and crunch and oh so yum! The succulent tender pork is greatly enjoyed with the delicious gravy. Plenty of sides to keep you interested with a lovely slightly sour potato salad, sauerkraut, gherkins, and a side salad. This particular dish offered an amount for at least two people, so you may want to consult the waitstaff on how many dishes to order and best to share. I can’t wait to try some of their other dishes.

Hofbrauhaus - Weisswurst

VIC, Melbourne – Hofbrauhaus

This German pub certainly is buzzing with lots of people enjoying themselves on a late night in Melbourne. There’s a great range of German dishes on the menu and I chose the Speck Kasepatzle which is like a carbonara, but a German version. Small flat soft tender pieces of pasta immersed in a rich creamy cheese sauce with herbs and a mild and not salty speck. Delicious but very rich. I ate this along with two German sausages, weisswurst, which were very tender and had a light herbed flavour. This was also enjoyed with a sweet mustard and a lovely freshly baked pretzel which wasn’t salty. A delicious generous meal giving me a taste of Germany.
