I can’t say that many of the dishes on the menu were recognisable to my time in Vietnam though there are some typical dishes and also a fusion with Australian produce too. The rice paper rolls were solid though lacked that burst of freshness typically associated with Vietnamese cuisine and the rice paper was a bit chewy, though it did come with an excellent dipping sauce. The satay skewers, while grilled with a lovely flavour were a little dry and despite a delicious satay sauce, a bit uninspiring. The sang chou bow, however, was an excellent entree with a very flavoursome fine beef mince filling. For mains, the chef’s special seafood dish was excellent, providing plenty of tender seafood served in a lovely sauce. Special call out to the ultra tender squid. The marinated roast chicken carried lovely flavours though was dry. In comparison, the chef’s special of fried crocodile was moist and tender and was the highlight of the night. In the vein of salt and pepper squid, crocodile was encased in a golden brown light batter, deep fried, and seasoned with salt and pepper, enjoyed with onions, greens, and chillies. Absolutely fantastic! I did have a small taste of ice chendol which was lacking palm sugar syrup and was disappointing. I enjoyed a tasty fried ice cream with a lovely crispy coconut batter. A mixed bag of dishes, some fantastic, others disappointing. The dishes here are more tempered to Western palettes rather than the authentic cuisine Vietnamese can deliver.
I got back to my desk and surveyed the well filled bahn mi. First bite in presented lots of fresh sliced carrots, cucumber, roast pork, and crunchy pork crackling. Chilli is optional but I definitely asked for it. The coriander is distinctive and the bahn mi is tasty, though, lacking in a few areas. The bun is nice though is not like the baguettes made at Le Vietname which are amazing. There is a spread of mayo and pate, though the pate is undetectable. The bahn mi appears a little dry whereas it should be moist. It’s not a bad representation, though it could be better. The iced coffee was excellent though.
The Red Chair Cafe offers breakfast and coffee in the morning and a range of items for lunch, mainly of a Vietnamese, Asian theme. I ordered the bun bo zao and received a big bowl of yum. Delicious soft soothing rice noodles mixed in with pickled cucumber strips, thinly sliced carrots, tender slices of beef, and the sweet salty spicy mix of the dressing to add that flavour punch and life to the dish making it so enjoyable. I really like the crushed peanuts on top which add texture. The meal is light but filling. I can see why this place is such a popular choice amongst the lunchtime crowd.
This looked like a dish I’d see in Vietnam, and when I tasted it, it took me right back. The mint sprigs are the identifying feature, the crunchy spring rolls dipped in a slightly sour sauce another. The rice vermicelli noodles were nice and soft, contrasted against the crunch of spring rolls, peanuts, and a slight crispness on the grilled pork. Packed with flavour, it takes me to my time in Vietnam. Absolutely fantastic and filling!
I guess the name of the restaurant says it all – “Modern”, not authentic, Westernised Vietnamese cuisine. While disappointed not to be eating the real thing, the fusion or mix of dishes from neighbouring countries, provided several dishes with interesting flavours. None of the dishes were poor, each one flavoursome and characterised by a sweet dressing of sorts which added further flavour. I particularly enjoyed the roast duck and lychee in red curry which was excellent. A close second was the Saigon chicken with crispy skin and tender flesh. The beef salad had a bit of kick and was quite fresh and the entrees of rice paper rolls and fish cakes were a lovely way to kick the night off. My steamed banana and sticky rice dessert in coconut milk was pretty good too. A lovely restaurant with a range of tasty dishes, wide open space, friendly service and takeaway also available.
The cuisine of foreign countries in Australia isn’t always a true representation which is a shame. After my recent trip to Vietnam, I headed to Mama Tran for some Vietnamese flavours and ordered a range of dishes. The chicken wing was a bit unusual with the sugar, the prawn fritters had a nice spiced batter but were ok. The banh mi was well packed full of tender slices of pork, carrot, cucumber, coriander and a sweet sauce, but lacked the punch I was expecting in flavour and the bread roll is not like the soft light French baguettes. The flat rice noodles in a sweet sauce was a little unusual but the acid of the lemon counteracted this. I liked the minced beef and flavoursome braised pork, but the dish as a whole was rather underwhelming and lacking punch and the freshness that is associated with Vietnamese cuisine.

Situated on Barrack Street lies Le Vietnam, a Vietnamese cafe with a chic interior serving coffee, Vietnamese bahn mi, and French patisserie items like profiteroles. I had the pork bahn mi and thoroughly enjoyed the delicious bread holding the Asian slaw contents of julienned carrots along with refreshing cucumber and greens. The tender pork was flavoursome but I liked the chilli sauce which added a real kick to the meal. I ordered a chocolate profiterole which was superb. A lovely light choux pastry filled with a delicious smooth, light, chocolatey custard that made you savour each morsel. So yum. A delicious cheap eat with dessert included.
Food courts can be a bit hit and miss but there can also be some great offerings. There’s Thali Contemporary Indian serving some of the best Indian food in Perth. A few other examples that come to mind are Crust Gourmet Pizza and my recent visit, Viet Hoa. These are both a “mini” version from the full scale restaurant offerings. Crust serves pizza by the slice without having to order a large pizza. Great way to try a some of the varieties on offer. Same too with Viet Hoa. The restaurant in Northbridge has an extensive offering. Here, there are dishes prepared from the menu or you can go with a combo and sample some dishes from the display cabinet. No compromise on quality, tender proteins, great flavour. It’s excellent there are some low cost lunch options which are still tasty. The food court is very clean. Viet Hoa has PayPass so you tap and go and then find a table and sit down to enjoy your lunch. I got a decent serving and was comfortably satisfied.
Well in comparison to the chaotic consumption of pho around me in the attempt to complete the What The Pho Challenge and win a $50 voucher, I ordered wok fried noodles with duck and slowly enjoyed my meal. The smoky wok flavour imparted into the noodles adds an excellent dimension and lives up to the name of the dish. A satisfactory serving, good quantity of tender roasted duck along with the other ingredients made for an enjoyable meal. I take it the group enjoyed their pho, otherwise, they wouldn’t of ploughed on for the allotted 20 minutes.
