Tan's Food Court - 2 Brown Men: Plain Prata with Fish Curry

Tan’s Food Court – 2 Brown Men – 9 Jul 2016

I visited the 2 Brown Men stall and got a crispy vadai as I’m a sucker for anything deep fried and also a plain prata which is served with fish curry gravy (no fish, just the curry). The vadai was the first to arrive with a little spiced coconut chutney which was a delicious accompaniment. The vadai is nice and crunchy and had a lovely soft center flavoured by the chutney. That disappeared in no time. A lovely tasty snack. Then the plain prata was served which easily tore apart. Crunchy on the top, slightly elastic inside, the soft dough was a delight to eat on it’s own, but even better with a flavoursome curry to dip into. I was in the zone tearing off a piece, dipping, and enjoying. I polished that off, literally, the final pieces reserved to leave the bowl clean of it’s contents. Awesome value for just $3!!! I must point out that the curry doesn’t contain fish, it’s just the curry or gravy, but that’s all you need with a roti prata. I came back for a takeaway order of chicken biriyani. The chicken biriyani had an excellent texture of nice loose rice grains with a lovely spice and delicious tender flavoursome chicken and curried vegetables. Yummy lunch.

Johnny's Burger Joint - Jucy Lucy Burger

Johnny’s Burger Joint – 8 Jun 2016

Johnny’s Burger Joint serves an array of American style burgers made with hand ground beef. I ordered the Jucy Lucy, a patty stuffed with cheese and served with onions, crispy bacon, and BBQ Sauce. The burgers are made fresh so after around 15 minutes, it was served. Johnny has perfected each of his sauces with a trip to the US and it shows. The tasty bun encases a slightly dense well cooked patty that is full of meatiness and flavour. Each bite results in the goeey cheese oozing out. The stuffed cheese is different and helps keep the patty moist and is really delicious. The BBQ sauce provides a lovely moisteness and is not overly sweet like the supermarket sauces. There’s plenty of crispy bacon (I like when the menu description is on the mark with what you get) which adds to the flavour and makes for a very enjoyable burger. While the burger isn’t overly large, it can get a bit monotonous and is an effort to get through, however, sometimes when you’re hungry all you need is a burger and Johnny’s Burger Joint hit the spot for me.

Johnny's Burger Joint - The Troublemaker

Johnny’s Burger Joint – 24 Oct 2014

Not by design, but I’ve been visiting a few burger places of late so an invite to the soft opening of Johnny’s Burger Joint was just what the doctor ordered. I really liked the menu which takes on a distinctly American theme and offers items that you don’t see in Perth. A diner menu for the day plus burgers which keep on being served well into the night. Nothing fancy, just full of heart and flavour. They look that way and initially taste that way, but with each bite the burger’s ingredients transform into something special. It just keeps on getting tastier and tastier. Wash it down with a milkshake, grab some sides like cheese sticks, curly fries, cheese and bacon fries, chilli cheese fries or grab some buffalo wings, and you’re in heaven.

Delhi 6 - Special Delhi 6 Platter

Delhi 6 – 23 Nov 2013

With all the dishes we ordered, we got an excellent variety of the Indian food on offer. The platter was generous with the standouts being fish amritisari and vegetable samosas. The generous serve of tandoori chicken was tasty too, but not a true representation of tandoori chicken. As with the entrees, the mains also contained proteins which were perfectly cooked in delicious sauces. I loved the butter chicken but the chicken lacked the tandoor imparted flavour. The lamb vindaloo had a heat that slowly builds up while the crushed peanut infused curry in the prawn jalfrezi also had a bite but was delicious. The breads were really good and so too the desserts. The goat curry was tasty and so too the biriyani, but not an authentic version. The food at Delhi 6 is solid without being spectacular. It’s worth popping by if you are craving Indian.

Casa Del Amici - Supremo Pizza

Casa Del Amici – 29 Oct 2013

One is always going to compare restaurants and if I compared Cafe Nocello to Casa Del Amici, Cafe Nocello wins hands down across all dishes which I’ve eaten at both restaurants. Having said that, Casa Del Amici isn’t horrible by any stretch but I believe if you want Italian food in a relaxed environment, then Cafe Nocello is a more worthy choice. Casa Del Amici presents a warm friendly atmosphere and I liked the fried bocconcini balls and the chilli jam to start off with. The pink snapper fish limoncello was cooked perfectly, soft, tender and moist but I would have loved some more of that delicious butter sauce, and please, please add dressing to a salad because it is very dry and tasteless and gives salad a bad wrap. The tortellini was delicious but a little dry at times but the odd portions of pancetta infused fat added some lovely flavours to the dish. The pizza was a little disappointing to my mind. The base and flavour of the pizza was lacking compared to what a pizza can deliver. The small taste of tiramisu was excellent but the profiteroles were too firm and crunchy instead of being soft and moist. The light custard and gooey warm chocolate sauce only just saved the dish. It’s a lovely venue, obviously very popular, just a few small tweaks and the quality of the food can rise to a level worthy of honouring Italian cuisine in all it’s greatness. They’re not too far off the mark.

Thousand Spices - Butter Chicken & Yellow Rice

Thousand Spices Indian Restaurant – 26 Oct 2013

The flavour profile of Thousand Spices Indian Restaurant is very different to any Indian restaurant I’ve eaten at. I’d say the food takes a south Indian / Sri Lankan origin so it was interesting to experience something different. The portions are generous with lots of protein and curry. The curries are tasty and carry great flavours. I really loved the lamb palek gosht which had a lovely blend of spices mixed in with tender lamb and spinach. This is a solid restaurant serving tasty curries at excellent prices. The locals obviously love it as the restaurant was packed out and there was a constant stream of customers collecting their takeaway orders. The restaurant is also featured in the Entertainment Book with a coupon for 25% off the bill up to $20.
