Maylands welcomes Mr Hawker, a Malaysian style eatery offering all the dishes one will find at a bargain price. I hopped on the train and chose a few dishes as part of my takeaway order. The first was deep fried pork belly. Whilst not eaten straightaway at it’s optimum, I didn’t think pork belly worked well being deep fried despite it being tender and tasty with that spicy nam ju chilli sauce. For me pork belly cooked long and slow or roasted is preferable. I also got a serve of Penang style kway teow which presented super silky ribbons of flat rice noodles in a very spicy chilli mix. The kway teow was tasty but I would have like more flavour. Thankfully I also chose another dish being much milder in flavour, the rice flour roll with mushrooms and shredded pork. It’s a noodle dish and once again the rice noodles were super tender. The flavour is quite tasty with the mushrooms and shredded pork adding additional body. I also got a soothing cup of hot teh terik which was really delicious. The flavours of the food at Mr Hawker are pretty good though lacking a bit in intensity. Mornings and late afternoons serve certain dishes such as roti canai, other dishes are available all day.
